Sample prompt
f′(x) changes from positive to negative at x = 3. Does f have a relative maximum or minimum there? Justify your answer.
✓
The answer: a relative maximum at x = 3
✓
The reason: f′ changes sign from + to − at x = 3
✓
Written as a sentence, not just a sign chart
Right number, no reason? That point can still be lost.

THE REAL CHALLENGE
Lots of students get calculus in class and still lose points on the exam
AP Calculus doesn’t only check that you can find a derivative. It checks that you can explain what the answer means, show the work graders look for, and do it fast — often with no calculator. That’s a different skill, and most classes don’t have time to teach it.
1
The algebra underneath gives way
Most calculus mistakes are really algebra or trig mistakes. One sign slip in line two, and the rest of the problem falls apart.
2
The free-response wants reasons, not just numbers
Graders give points for a clear sentence that names the rule you used and why it applies. A right number with no reason can still miss that point.
3
A lot of the exam bans your calculator
Most of the multiple-choice questions, and four of the six free-response questions, are no-calculator. Students who lean on a graphing calculator all year feel that on test day.

AP Calculus AB, BC and Precalculus, explained in plain English
Three College Board courses, one exam style. Here is what each one covers, and how the exam is built.
What is AP Calculus AB?
AP Calculus AB is a College Board course that matches about one semester of college calculus. It has eight units: limits and continuity, two units on finding derivatives, two units on using derivatives, integration, differential equations, and using integrals. The exam is scored from 1 to 5. Unit 5 (analyzing functions with derivatives) and Unit 6 (integration) carry the most weight.
What is AP Calculus BC?
AP Calculus BC covers everything in AB, plus two more units: parametric, polar and vector functions, and infinite sequences and series. It also adds extra topics inside Units 6 to 8, like integration by parts and Euler’s method. BC matches about two semesters of college calculus, and BC students also receive an AB subscore.
How the AP Calculus exam works
The exam has two sections, each worth half your score. Section I is multiple choice: Part A with no calculator, then Part B with a graphing calculator required. Section II has six free-response questions: two with a graphing calculator in 30 minutes, then four with no calculator in 60 minutes. It is a hybrid digital exam — you read the questions and answer the multiple choice in the Bluebook app, then handwrite your free-response answers in a paper booklet.

WHY ONLINE WORKS
One-to-one online lessons, built for the way calculus is learned
Calculus is learned by doing problems, line by line, with someone who catches the slip the moment it happens. A shared whiteboard does exactly that. Searching for an AP Calculus tutor near me makes sense — but the best calculus tutor for your course is rarely on your street. Online, your choice isn’t limited by your zip code.
🎯
A calculus specialist, wherever you live
In Houston, Toronto or Vienna, you learn with someone who teaches AP Calculus week in, week out — not a general tutor who covers it now and then.
✍️
The same problem, on the same screen
You write, your tutor watches each line. Mistakes get caught at step two, not at the end when it’s too late to see where it went wrong.
🧮
Calculator and no-calculator, practiced on purpose
We train you to use your graphing calculator well on the questions that need it, and to work cleanly by hand on the ones that don’t.
🗓️
Lessons that fit a busy junior year
Around school, sports, other APs and the SAT. Weekend and early-evening slots in US time zones, plus after-school times in Europe and the Gulf.
HOW IT WORKS
From your first lesson to a calm test day
A simple path, shaped around your course, your school’s pace and the score you’re aiming for.
1
Free trial and diagnosis
We look at a recent test, work a few problems together, and find the exact units and habits that are costing you points.
2
Your plan
A week-by-week plan matched to your school’s unit order, your course (AB, BC or Precalculus) and the May exam.
3
Weekly one-to-one lessons
Each lesson mixes the idea, worked examples and real free-response practice. You leave knowing exactly what to practice before next time.
4
The exam run-in
From early spring: timed sections, full free-response sets, and calculator and no-calculator drills, until test day feels familiar.

WHAT WE COVER
Every AP Calculus AB unit, and where students lose points in each
AP Calculus AB has eight units. Here’s what each one covers, its share of the AB exam, and the mistake we see most often — because knowing where points go is half the battle.
Unit 1
10–12%
Limits and continuity
Limits from graphs, tables and equations, and what makes a function continuous.
Where points go
Not stating all three conditions for continuity in words.
Unit 2
10–12%
Derivatives: definition and basic rules
The limit definition of a derivative, plus the power, product and quotient rules.
Where points go
Missing that a limit question is really the definition of a derivative in disguise.
Unit 3
9–13%
Chain rule, implicit and inverse functions
Derivatives of composite, implicit and inverse functions.
Where points go
Forgetting the “inside” derivative in the chain rule.
Unit 4
10–15%
Derivatives in context
Related rates, motion, linear approximation and L’Hospital’s rule.
Where points go
Answers with no units, and not saying what the number means in the real situation.
Unit 5
15–18%
Analyzing functions with derivatives
The Mean Value Theorem, maximums and minimums, concavity and curve sketching.
Where points go
A justification that doesn’t name the theorem or check that it applies.
Unit 6
17–20%
Integration and accumulation
Riemann sums, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, antiderivatives and u-substitution.
Where points go
Mixing up left, right, midpoint and trapezoid sums, and dropping the + C.
Unit 7
6–12%
Differential equations
Slope fields, separation of variables, and growth and decay models.
Where points go
One small slip when separating variables, which costs every point after it.
Unit 8
10–15%
Using integrals
Average value, motion, area between curves and volume.
Where points go
Setting up a volume integral with the wrong radius.
Unit weights are each unit’s share of the AP Calculus AB exam, from the College Board’s Course and Exam Description.
The free-response questions we drill
The six free-response questions follow familiar patterns. We practice each one until the setup feels automatic.
1
Rates in and out
Water flowing into a tank, people entering a park: build and read an accumulation function.
2
Particle motion
Position, velocity and acceleration; speeding up or slowing down; total distance traveled.
3
Area and volume
Area between curves, discs, washers and cross-sections.
4
Tables and Riemann sums
Estimate from data, then justify with the Mean Value or Intermediate Value Theorem.
5
Differential equations
Sketch a slope field, separate the variables, find the particular solution.
6
The graph of f′
Read a derivative’s graph to find where f increases, peaks or changes concavity.
AP CALCULUS BC
Need an AP Calculus BC tutor? Here’s what changes
AP Calculus BC moves faster and goes further. It includes everything above, plus:
Unit 9 · Parametric equations, polar coordinates and vector-valued functions
Motion in the plane, speed and distance, and area in polar form.
Unit 10 · Infinite sequences and series
Convergence tests, Taylor and Maclaurin series, intervals of convergence and error bounds. It’s one of the heaviest units on the BC exam, and the one students worry about most.
BC-only topics inside Units 6–8
Integration by parts, partial fractions, improper integrals, Euler’s method, logistic growth and arc length.
Where points go
Picking a convergence test that doesn’t fit, skipping the endpoint checks on an interval of convergence, and a vague error-bound sentence. Our AP Calculus BC tutoring gives series and polar the extra weeks they need, without letting the AB basics slip — they still make up most of the BC exam. For a full walk-through of the test itself, see our AP Calculus BC exam guide.
AP PRECALCULUS
AP Precalculus tutoring, the course before calculus
AP Precalculus is a College Board course that gets students ready for calculus. It has four units, and the AP exam tests the first three:
Unit 1 · Polynomial and rational functions
ON THE AP EXAM
Unit 2 · Exponential and logarithmic functions
ON THE AP EXAM
Unit 3 · Trigonometric and polar functions
ON THE AP EXAM
Unit 4 · Functions with parameters, vectors and matrices
Taught in many classes, but it isn’t on the AP exam.
CLASS ONLY
Where points go
Modeling questions that ask you to choose a function type and explain why, and unit-circle values without a calculator. A good AP Precalculus tutor makes the jump to AB or BC much smaller. More in our AP Precalculus guide.

WHY WE EXIST
One educator’s problem, solved one student at a time
Educifly began with a simple problem. As an IB Mathematics educator, Richa saw bright students lose marks — not because they lacked ability, but because nobody taught them how the exam actually works. Good, specialist tutoring was hard to find, especially online.
Calculus sits at the heart of the math she has taught since 2010, so she hand-picks every tutor on our AP Calculus team herself. The goal is simple: a student in Dallas, Toronto or Madrid gets the same quality of teaching as one in a big test-prep hub — one student at a time.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
AP Calculus tutoring, your questions answered
What does an AP Calculus tutor do?
An AP Calculus tutor teaches the AB, BC or Precalculus course one-to-one and gets you ready for the May exam. At Educifly, that means fixing weak units, practicing the six free-response question types, and training you to write the short justifications graders give points for. Every lesson is live and online.
Do you tutor both AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC?
Yes. We tutor AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC and AP Precalculus. BC students get extra time on series and on parametric, polar and vector functions, while we keep the AB topics strong, since they still make up most of the BC exam.
Which AP Calculus topics do students find hardest?
In AB, it’s usually related rates, justifying answers with the Mean Value Theorem, and volume problems. In BC, infinite series causes the most trouble, especially convergence tests and error bounds. For a longer answer, here’s our honest take on how hard AP Calculus AB really is.
How is the AP Calculus exam scored?
The exam has two sections, each worth 50%: multiple choice and six free-response questions. Your total becomes a score from 1 to 5. A 3 is called “qualified”, a 4 “well qualified” and a 5 “extremely well qualified”. Many colleges give credit or placement for a 4 or 5, but each college sets its own rules.
Can I use a calculator on the AP Calculus exam?
Only on some parts. A graphing calculator is required for Part B of the multiple-choice section and for the first two free-response questions. The rest of the exam, including four of the six free-response questions, is no-calculator. Check the College Board’s approved calculator list before test day.
Is the AP Calculus exam on paper or digital?
It’s a hybrid digital exam. You read the questions and answer the multiple choice in the College Board’s Bluebook app, then handwrite your free-response answers in a paper booklet. We practice both ways, so neither feels new on test day.
How do I get a 5 on AP Calculus?
Know the core skills cold, practice the free-response questions under time, and write a reason for every answer that asks for one. Most students who miss a 5 lose points on setup and justification, not on hard math. That is exactly what one-to-one tutoring fixes.
Do you offer AP Precalculus tutoring?
Yes. We tutor all four AP Precalculus units, with the most time on the three that are on the AP exam: polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and trigonometric and polar functions. Strong precalculus makes AB or BC much easier the year after.
When should my child start AP Calculus tutoring?
The best time is early in the fall, before the first unit test, or over the summer before the course starts. Many families start in winter, when grades slip on derivatives or integrals. Starting in spring still works — we focus on the units and free-response types worth the most points.
How many AP Calculus lessons a week does a student need?
Most students do one hour a week, which is enough to stay ahead of class and fix problems while they’re small. Students catching up, or taking BC, often do two. In the weeks before the May exam, families usually add timed practice sessions.
How much does an AP Calculus tutor cost?
It depends on the course, how often you meet and how long until the exam — weekly BC support and a short AB review are very different plans. We give you a clear quote after the free trial lesson, once we know what your child needs. No card is needed to try.
Is online AP Calculus tutoring as good as in-person?
For calculus, it’s often better. A shared whiteboard lets your tutor see every line you write and catch mistakes as they happen. And online, you can work with a true AP Calculus specialist instead of whoever happens to live nearby.
Do you tutor AP Calculus students outside the US?
Yes. We teach AP Calculus students at American and international schools in Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, including London, The Hague, Madrid, Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore. Lessons are scheduled in your local time zone.
What happens in the free trial lesson?
Your tutor works through a few problems with you, looks at a recent test if you have one, and finds the units and habits costing you points. You leave with a clear plan, and you decide afterward whether to continue. No card, no contract, no pressure.
Can I take both the AP Calculus AB and BC exams?
No. The College Board doesn’t let students take both Calculus exams in the same school year. BC students also receive an AB subscore, so the AB material still shows up in their results. If you’re unsure which exam fits, we can help you decide in the free trial.
What if my tutor isn’t the right fit?
Tell us, and we’ll match you with another AP Calculus specialist. The fit between student and tutor matters a lot in calculus, so we’d rather change early than let lessons drift.
