THE REAL CHALLENGE

Most IGCSE tutoring is aimed at the wrong exam

The IGCSE is not the GCSE. Different boards, different papers, different coursework, and a tiering decision that quietly sets a ceiling on your child’s grade. Here is what usually goes wrong.

Taught to the wrong board

Cambridge 0580 and Edexcel 4MA1 are not the same paper. A tutor teaching generic maths drills questions your child will never sit.

Nobody checks the tier

Core and Extended are different papers with different grade ceilings. Students are tutored for months without anyone asking which one they are entered for.

Content revision, no paper technique

Knowing the topic and scoring the mark are two skills. Most IGCSE tuition teaches only the first, then wonders where the marks went.

CORE OR EXTENDED

Core or Extended is the decision that sets the ceiling

Most Cambridge IGCSE subjects are split into two tiers. Core covers the main syllabus and is capped at grade C — or grade 4 on the 9–1 scale. Extended covers the same syllabus plus a supplement, and opens up grades A* to A (9 to 7). They are different papers, sat on different days. A student entered for Core cannot achieve an A no matter how well they perform.

Core

Highest grade: C / 4

Grades available — C to G (4 to 1)

Content — Core syllabus

Papers — Core papers

Who it suits — Securing a solid pass with confidence

Where a tutor helps most — Not dropping a single available mark

Extended

Highest grade: A* / 9

Grades available — A* to E (9 to 3)

Content — Core plus the supplement

Papers — Extended papers

Who it suits — Aiming high, or moving on to A-Level or IB

Where a tutor helps most — Supplement topics and long multi-mark questions

Moving from Core to Extended is realistic if it is decided early — there is a supplement to cover, and that takes time. Left to the final months, it usually is not. It is the first thing an IGCSE core and extended tutor should check, and the first thing we check in a trial lesson.

YOUR BOARD, YOUR CODE

We teach to the syllabus code not to a generic subject

Look at your child’s school letter or timetable and you will find a code. That code decides the papers, the topics and the mark scheme. A Cambridge IGCSE tutor and an Edexcel IGCSE tutor are teaching genuinely different courses, and we match on the code, not just the subject name.

Not sure which board your child sits? Bring the letter to the trial lesson and we will read it with you. If you want the full breakdown first, we wrote one: Cambridge vs Edexcel IGCSE.

EVERY SUBJECT

Pick the subject, meet the specialist

Each of our IGCSE tutors teaches one or two subjects, not the whole timetable. Go straight to the subject your child needs — every page explains how we teach it and how to start.

Need a subject not listed? Ask us — we can usually match one. For the full picture, see our guide to every IGCSE subject.

YOUR TUTOR

Who teaches your child, and how an hour is spent

IGCSE online tutoring only works if the tutor knows your board. Every student is matched by subject, board and tier before the first lesson. A private IGCSE tutor should be able to open your child’s last mock and tell you exactly where the marks went — not just re-teach the chapter.

🎓

Specialists, by subject and board

Degree-level in their subject, with years of IGCSE teaching across Cambridge and Edexcel behind them.

📝

They know the mark scheme

Comfortable with both tiers, the command words, the working a marker needs to see, and where students routinely lose easy marks.

🛡️

Vetted and trained by us

Every tutor meets one standard before they teach a single Educifly student.

A typical lesson

1

We open your child’s own work

A past paper, a mock, a topic that will not stick. Never a generic worksheet.

2

We mark it live, together

On a shared screen, so your child sees what separates a 2-mark answer from a 4-mark one.

3

They redo it in their own words

The step that turns “I understood it” into “I can write it under time”.

4

A short written summary afterwards

What was covered, what to practise, what comes next. Parents get it too.

THE ASSESSMENT

Where IGCSE marks are actually won and lost

Most families think of the IGCSE as one final exam. It is usually several papers with quite different demands, plus practical or coursework components in some subjects. Real IGCSE exam preparation covers all of it, because marks are dropped across all of it.

📄

The written papers

Most subjects run two or more papers, split by question style: short structured answers on one, longer multi-mark responses on another. We teach the timing and technique for each separately, because they reward different habits.

🔬

Practicals and the alternative-to-practical paper

In the sciences, students sit either a practical exam or a written paper about experiments. It is one of the most predictable places to gain marks, and one of the least practised.

📚

Coursework and controlled assessment

Where a subject includes it, coursework is marked against set criteria and moderated. We coach the plan, structure and redrafts. We never write it — the work stays your child’s own.

Wondering what mark it takes to reach a grade? Grade boundaries move every session — we cover how they work in our guide to IGCSE grade boundaries.

WHO IT’S FOR

Four students we see again and again

IGCSE tutoring is not only for students who are struggling. These are the four we are asked for most.

🎯

The student on the tier line

Entered for Core but capable of more. We work out honestly whether Extended is still reachable, and how much ground there is to make up.

✈️

The student who joined mid-course

Moved schools, countries or boards. We find the gap between what they were taught and what they will be examined on, then close it.

🏅

The student aiming for A* / 9

Already strong, losing marks on long questions and timing. Fine margins, worked one paper at a time.

🗓️

The student sitting IGCSE early

Or as a private candidate, without a school programme behind them. We build the whole route to the exam.

WHY WE EXIST

Specialists, hand-picked and trained to one standard

Educifly began with a simple problem. As an IB Mathematics educator, Richa kept meeting capable students who were losing marks for reasons that had nothing to do with ability — nobody had taught them what their particular exam actually rewarded. The same was true at IGCSE, where the board and the tier change the answer entirely.

So she built a practice around specialists. Today that means hand-picking IGCSE tutors by subject and by board, training them to one standard, and matching them to your child online. A student in Madrid, Dubai or Mumbai gets the same teaching as one at a top international school anywhere.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

IGCSE tutoring, your questions answered

The questions parents ask us most before booking a trial lesson. Anything else, just ask on WhatsApp.

How much does an IGCSE tutor cost?

It depends on the subject, the tier and how often you meet. A short push on one paper and weekly support across three sciences are very different commitments. We give you a clear quote after the free trial lesson, once we know what your child actually needs. No card is needed to try.

What is the difference between Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE?

They are separate exam boards with separate syllabuses, papers and mark schemes. Cambridge uses codes like 0580 for Maths; Edexcel uses 4MA1. Your child’s school picks one. In practice it decides which past papers are worth doing. We teach both, and we match the tutor to your board.

Should my child take Core or Extended?

Core is capped at grade C, or 4 on the 9–1 scale. Extended reaches A*, or 9. If your child is heading for A-Levels or the IB Diploma, Extended is usually the right call. The decision needs making early in the course, because the supplement content takes real time to cover properly.

When should IGCSE tutoring start before exams?

A term ahead is comfortable, two is better. That leaves room to cover content first and then practise whole papers under time, which is where most of the improvement actually comes from. Starting six weeks out still helps, but by then it is exam technique only, not new ground.

How many IGCSE subjects should a student take?

Most students take between seven and nine. Sixth forms and universities care far more about the grades than the count, so an extra subject that drags the others down is a poor trade. If you are still choosing, our guide to IGCSE subjects lists what is available.

Can a tutor help with coursework and practicals?

Yes. For practicals we work through the alternative-to-practical paper, which asks about experiments in writing and is very learnable. For coursework we coach the plan, the structure and the redrafts, and give honest feedback on drafts. We never write it — it has to stay your child’s own.

Is online IGCSE tutoring effective?

For the IGCSE it is usually better than local tutoring, because board and tier matter so much. IGCSE online classes let you pick a tutor who teaches your exact syllabus rather than whoever happens to live nearby, and we mark your child’s own paper live on a shared screen.

What grade can realistically be improved in one term?

It depends where the marks are being lost. Students losing marks on technique rather than knowledge usually move faster, because the content is already there. We would rather read a mock paper and tell you honestly what is reachable than promise you a number up front.

Ready to find the right IGCSE tutor?

Book a free trial lesson and bring a recent mock or past paper. We’ll show you exactly where the marks are going, and how we’d fix it — no cost, no commitment.
