What AP tutoring covers, and what your AP score really means
What is AP tutoring?
AP tutoring is one-to-one teaching built around a College Board Advanced Placement course and its exam. Good AP tutoring does three things: it keeps you on top of the class through the year, it teaches the exam’s own rules — the format, the calculator policy and how free-response answers earn points — and it plans the run-in to the AP exams in May. Tutoring that only re-teaches the textbook does a third of the job.
How AP exams are scored
Every AP exam is scored from 1 to 5. Your multiple-choice and free-response results are combined into one composite score, which then becomes your AP score. The exams take place over two weeks in May, and scores usually come out in July.
Does an AP score earn college credit?
It depends on the college. Each college sets its own rules: some give credit for a 3, many want a 4 or 5, and some give placement into a higher class instead of credit. The College Board’s AP Credit Policy search lets you look up a college’s rules by subject. That’s why we ask for your target colleges in the free trial — it decides what score you’re aiming for.

THE REAL CHALLENGE
Every AP exam plays by its own rules, and most help treats them all the same
AP courses look alike on a school schedule. Their exams don’t. Here’s what families tell us before they come to us.
Each exam is built differently
AP Calculus bans your calculator on most of the free-response. AP Statistics lets you use one the whole way and has you type every answer. AP Biology is full of data and experiment questions. A tutor who doesn’t know the exam can’t coach it.
The free-response decides most scores
Graders give points for a clear reason, a named rule or a conclusion in context. Students who know the content still lose points when nobody has shown them what a full answer looks like.
Several APs, one May
Many juniors and seniors take three or more APs. The exams land in the same two weeks, sometimes on the same day, on top of finals and the SAT. Without a plan, the hardest subject gets crowded out.
HOW IT WORKS
From your first lesson to a calm two weeks in May
Whether you want AP class tutoring all year or an AP exam tutor for the spring run-in, the path is simple — and shaped around your subjects, your school’s pace and the scores you need.
1
Free trial and diagnosis
We look at a recent test or free-response answer, work a few problems together, and find the units and habits costing you points.
2
Your plan
3
Weekly one-to-one lessons
Each lesson mixes the idea, worked examples and real exam-style questions. We help with homework and unit tests too, because class grades matter for college applications.
4
The exam run-in
From early spring: timed sections, full free-response sets and practice exams, planned so your subjects don’t compete for the same week.
A typical AP year with us
SUMMER
Optional head start: the first unit, or the skills a new course leans on (algebra for Calculus, reading graphs for Biology).
FALL
Weekly lessons that follow your class. Good habits early, so one tough unit test doesn’t turn into a bad semester.
WINTER
The heaviest units in each course, plus free-response practice one question type at a time.
MARCH
Finish the course content and start timed free-response sets.
APRIL TO MAY
Full practice exams, subject by subject, spread so no week is overloaded.
STARTING LATE?
We shrink the plan around the units and question types worth the most points in each exam.
PLANNING YOUR APS
Taking three or four APs? Here’s how we keep them all on track
Each subject gets its own specialist. We plan them together, so one family has one clear picture of the whole year.
One specialist per subject
Your Calculus tutor teaches calculus. Your Chemistry tutor teaches chemistry. Nobody is stretched across five subjects.
One plan across all of them
We line up your lessons around your exam dates, so the subject you find hardest gets the most time in the weeks before its exam.
Mixed weeks, by design
Two exams on the same day, or three in one week, are common. We practice back-to-back timed sections so it doesn’t feel new in May.
Still deciding on a program?
Some families weigh AP against the International Baccalaureate, especially at international schools that offer both. Our IB vs AP guide compares them side by side, and our post on whether the IB is harder than AP gives an honest answer. Already in the IB? See our IB tutoring. Taking the SAT this year too? See our SAT tutoring.
YOUR TUTOR
AP tutors who teach their subject every week
Our AP tutors come from the same specialist teams that teach IB and IGCSE — some of the most demanding high-school courses there are. That’s why we cover the subjects we do, and why every tutor stays in their lane.
🎯
Subject specialists
Each tutor teaches one subject area, with the depth to answer the “but why?” questions that textbooks skip.
📝
They know how each exam is marked
The format, the calculator rules, and exactly how free-response points are given for the setup, the answer and the reasoning.
✅
Vetted, then matched
Every tutor meets the same standard before teaching an Educifly student, and is matched to you by subject, course and the score you’re aiming for.
WHO IT’S FOR
Built for every kind of AP student
From the sophomore taking a first AP to the senior with four exams in May, there’s a plan for you.
The first-time AP student
AP is faster and deeper than regular classes. We build good habits early, so the jump doesn’t knock your grades.
The junior with a heavy schedule
Three or four APs, sports, the SAT. We plan the whole year so nothing gets dropped.
The student who does fine in class but not on the exam
Good homework grades, weaker practice-test scores. We fix the free-response, where that gap usually lives.
The student who needs a 4 or 5 for credit
We plan around the score your target colleges ask for, subject by subject.
The international-school student
Taking AP at an American or international school in London, The Hague, Paris, Munich or Dubai, often after IB or IGCSE. We teach the AP course and the AP exam, in your time zone.

WHY WE EXIST
Hand-picked specialists for every subject, one student at a time
Educifly began with a simple problem. As an IB Mathematics educator, Richa saw bright students lose marks — not because they lacked ability, but because nobody taught them how the exam actually works. Good, specialist tutoring was hard to find, especially online.
She built Educifly to fix that. For AP, that means hand-picking a specialist team for every subject we teach — from Calculus and Chemistry to Economics, English and French — and training them to one standard. A student in Houston, Toronto or Paris gets the same quality of teaching as one in a big test-prep hub — one student at a time.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
AP tutoring, your questions answered
What is AP tutoring?
AP tutoring is one-to-one teaching built around a College Board Advanced Placement course and its exam. At Educifly, it means a subject specialist who helps with class grades through the year, teaches the exam’s format and free-response rules, and plans the run-in to the AP exams in May. Every lesson is live and online.
Which AP subjects do you tutor?
We tutor AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1 and 2, AP Physics C: Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism, AP Macroeconomics and Microeconomics, AP Computer Science A and Principles, AP English Language and Literature, AP French Language and Culture, and AP Spanish Language and Culture. Each subject has its own specialist team. If you need a subject that isn’t listed, ask us in the free trial.
How are AP exams scored?
Every AP exam is scored from 1 to 5. Your multiple-choice and free-response results are combined into a composite score, which becomes your AP score. A 3 is called “qualified”, a 4 “well qualified” and a 5 “extremely well qualified”.
What AP score do colleges accept for credit?
Each college sets its own rules. Some give credit for a 3, many ask for a 4 or 5, and some offer placement into a higher class instead of credit. The College Board’s AP Credit Policy search shows a college’s rules by subject, so check your target colleges before setting a goal.
When are the AP exams?
AP exams take place over two weeks in May every year, with a morning and an afternoon session each day. Two of your exams can fall on the same day. Scores usually come out in July, and the exact dates are on the College Board’s AP Central website.
When should a student start AP tutoring?
The best time is early in the fall, before the first unit test, or over the summer before a new course starts. Many families start in winter, when grades slip in the heavier units. Starting in spring still works — we focus on the units and question types worth the most points.
How many hours of AP tutoring does a student need?
Most students do one hour a week per subject, which is enough to stay ahead of class and fix problems while they’re small. Students catching up, or taking a hard course like Calculus BC or Physics C, often do two. In the weeks before May, families usually add timed practice.
Can one tutor teach all my AP subjects?
No — and that’s on purpose. Each AP subject has its own specialist, because an AP Chemistry exam and an AP Statistics exam reward very different skills. We plan your subjects together, so you still get one clear schedule for the whole year.
Do you help with AP class grades and homework, or only the exam?
Both. Through the year, lessons follow your class: homework, unit tests and the topics you find hardest. From early spring, the focus moves to the AP exam itself, with timed sections and full free-response practice. Good class grades matter for college applications too.
Is online AP tutoring as good as in-person?
For AP, it’s often better. A shared screen lets your tutor see every line you write and catch mistakes as they happen, and several AP exams are now taken on a screen anyway. Online, you can also work with a true subject specialist instead of whoever lives nearby.
How much does AP tutoring cost?
Educifly’s 1-on-1 online AP tutoring costs $50–$150 USD per 60-minute session. Your rate depends on your tutor’s experience, your subject and course, and whether you book an exam crash course. The first trial lesson is free and lasts 30 minutes. You can pay as you go, or buy a package for a lower price per session. Invoices are issued in your local currency, there are no hidden fees, and you can cancel anytime.
Why does AP tutoring range from $50 to $150 per hour?
Three things set the rate. Tutor experience: a more experienced tutor costs more, and the most experienced specialists sit at the top of the range. Course: your subject and course shape where you sit in the range. Timing: intensive pre-exam crash courses cost more than regular weekly lessons. We confirm your exact rate after the free trial, once your tutor is matched.
Do you offer package discounts on AP tutoring?
Yes. You can pay as you go, session by session, or buy a package, which lowers your price per session. We share package options after your free trial, once we know how many sessions a week you need. Prices are listed in USD and invoices are issued in your local currency.
Do you tutor AP students outside the US?
Yes. We teach AP students in Canada and at American and international schools in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, including Toronto, Vancouver, London, The Hague, Paris, Dubai and Hong Kong. Lessons are scheduled in your local time zone.
Are AP exams taken on paper or on a computer?
It depends on the subject. Most AP exams are now taken in the College Board’s Bluebook app. Some, like AP Statistics, are fully digital. Others, like AP Calculus, are hybrid: you answer the multiple choice in Bluebook and handwrite the free-response in a paper booklet. Each subject page explains its own format.
What happens in the free trial lesson?
Your tutor works through a few problems with you, looks at a recent test if you have one, and finds the units and habits costing you points. You leave with a clear plan, and you decide afterward whether to continue. No card, no contract, no pressure.
What if my tutor isn’t the right fit?
Tell us, and we’ll match you with another specialist in the same subject. The fit between student and tutor matters a lot, so we’d rather change early than let lessons drift.
Ready to find the right AP tutor?
