WHAT IS IB ECONOMICS?

IB Economics, defined in
one paragraph

IB Economics is a two-year Group 3 subject in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, available at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). It covers four units — Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International Economics and Development Economics — and is assessed through three external exams (Papers 1, 2 and 3 for HL; Papers 1 and 2 for SL) plus an Internal Assessment worth 20% of the final grade. Students are graded on a 1–7 scale, with a 7 awarded only to candidates who combine precise terminology, accurate diagrams and structured evaluation across every assessment.

WHY EDUCIFLY

Why IB students choose Educifly for
IB Economics tutoring

IB Economics is unforgiving. The syllabus rewards precision, the IA rewards judgement, and Paper 1 rewards essay technique most students aren't taught at school. We don't fix that with more theory — we fix it with focused, examiner-led practice.

🎓

IB-specialist tutors only

Every tutor lives inside this syllabus. They know the criteria, the command terms and the grade boundary where students stall — and how to push past it.

MOST IMPACTFUL

🧭

A learning plan built around you

We assess your level in session one and build a plan around your gaps, your school's calendar and your target grade. No generic syllabus checklist.

🎯

Marks, not just material

Every session converts what you know into what the examiner rewards. You'll feel the shift in your next mock — not the one after that.

SYLLABUS COVERAGE

Full IB Economics syllabus coverage —
HL & SL

Whether you're an SL student building confidence in core theory or an HL student going deep on Theory of the Firm and quantitative policy work, your tutor calibrates every session to your level and your school's pacing. Every plan blends full-syllabus IB Economics tuition with targeted exam-technique drilling, so you build theory and marks at the same time.

UNIT 1

Microeconomics

Demand and supply, price elasticities, market structures (perfect competition, monopolistic competition, oligopoly, monopoly), market failure, externalities, public goods and government intervention.

HL+ · Theory of the Firm — costs, revenue, profit maximisation, price discrimination and efficiency.

UNIT 2

Macroeconomics

Measuring economic activity (GDP, GNI, HDI), aggregate demand and supply, Keynesian vs monetarist frameworks, fiscal and monetary policy, supply-side reform, and the trade-offs between low inflation, full employment and growth.

UNIT 3

International Economics

Comparative advantage, free trade vs protectionism (tariffs, quotas, subsidies), exchange rate systems, the balance of payments and the role of the WTO.

A unit where well-prepared students consistently bank high marks.

UNIT 4

Development Economics

Growth vs development, single and composite indicators, market-led vs interventionist strategies, FDI, microfinance, fair trade, aid and debt.

HL+ · Deeper evaluation of competing development theories and political economy.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

IB Economics IA help —
from article to final draft

The Internal Assessment is 20% of your final IB Economics grade — and the easiest place to give marks away. Most students don't lose marks because their economics is wrong. They lose them because they don't write to the IA mark scheme: diagram integration, structured evaluation, precise terminology and word count discipline.

5

stages covered, start to finish

STAGE 1

Article selection

Pick an article that gives you analytical depth without trapping you in a topic you can't evaluate. We vet your shortlist before you write a word.

STAGE 2

Diagram accuracy

The right diagram, every label correct, and a written explanation that integrates it into the argument — not just placed beside it.

STAGE 3

Economic analysis

Cause-and-effect chains that read like reasoning, not description. The kind that earn marks, not just ticks.

STAGE 4

Evaluation technique

Balanced, nuanced evaluation built around a clear conclusion. The criterion that separates a 5 from a 7 in almost every IA we see.

STAGE 5

Final polish

Terminology, structure, word count, clarity. The last 10% of the work that earns the last 10% of the marks.

HL & SL

Paper 1 — Essay Questions

IB examiners reward structured evaluation — a clear argument, a real counterargument, and a confident conclusion that shows you understand the limits of the theory.

WHAT WE DRILL

DEED structure (Define, Explain, Evaluate, Diagram), timed essays with examiner-style feedback, and balanced evaluation under exam pressure.

HL & SL

Paper 2 — Data Response

Paper 2 rewards students who read the data fast, pick the right model and produce concise answers under time pressure.

WHAT WE DRILL

Command term mastery (explain vs discuss vs evaluate), data interpretation, model selection, and timed past paper drills.

HL ONLY

Paper 3 — Extended Response

Paper 3 rewards precise application of quantitative and qualitative tools to scenarios you've never seen before.

WHAT WE DRILL

Calculations (multiplier, elasticity, terms of trade), policy frameworks for any scenario, and timed quantitative practice.

FAQ

Your IB Economics questions, answered

Everything IB students and parents ask before their first IB Economics session.

Book a Free Trial Class →

Do you offer IB Economics tutoring for HL and SL?

Yes. Educifly tutors teach both IB Economics HL and SL. HL sessions go deeper into Theory of the Firm, development evaluation and Paper 3 quantitative work. SL sessions focus on the four core units and Papers 1 and 2.

How quickly will my IB Economics grade improve?

Most students see a clear improvement in exam technique within 4–6 sessions. Across our full programmes, 93% of students improve by at least two grade boundaries before their final exam.

Can you help with my IB Economics Internal Assessment (IA)?

Yes. We support every stage of the IA — article selection, diagram accuracy, economic analysis, evaluation and final polish. Most students combine IA help with Paper 1 and Paper 2 exam prep.

Is the IB Economics free trial really free?

Yes. Every new IB student gets a 30-minute trial class with no payment and no commitment. You meet your tutor, try the platform and decide if it's the right fit before booking a single paid session.

Do you tutor IB Economics students in London, Geneva and Amsterdam?

Yes. We tutor IB students across the UK (London, Manchester, Oxford), Switzerland (Geneva, Zürich, Basel, Lausanne), the Netherlands (Amsterdam, The Hague), Germany (Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin), the UAE, Singapore, Hong Kong, India and 30+ other countries. Every session is live and online, scheduled around your school's time zone.

Are Educifly's tutors actual IB Economics specialists?

Yes. Every Educifly Economics tutor is an IB Economics specialist — not a generalist. Most have taught the IB curriculum directly, examined for the IB, or scored a Grade 7 themselves and gone on to teach.

What's the best time to start working with an IB Economics tutor?

The earlier the better, but it's never too late. Students who start at the beginning of DP1 build the strongest foundation. Students who start in DP2 most often come for IA support and Papers 1, 2 and 3 exam prep — and still see major grade jumps before final exams.

How much does IB Economics tutoring with Educifly cost?

Pricing depends on programme length and tutor seniority. We share full pricing on the free trial call after we understand your goals — no hidden fees, no long contracts.

What's the difference between IB Economics HL and SL?

SL covers the four core units in 150 teaching hours and is assessed through Papers 1 and 2. HL covers the same four units in 240 hours plus deeper content (Theory of the Firm, advanced macro and development evaluation) and adds Paper 3, a quantitative-heavy extended response paper. HL students typically write a more analytically demanding IA.

Do you offer IB Economics tutoring online for students in different time zones?

Yes. We tutor IB Economics students live online across every major time zone, from London (GMT/BST) to Geneva and Frankfurt (CET/CEST), Dubai (GST), Delhi (IST), Singapore and Hong Kong (SGT/HKT). Tutors are matched to your time zone, not the other way around.

Is online IB Economics tuition as effective as in-person?

Yes — for the IB it's often better. Online IB Economics tuition lets your tutor mark Paper 1 essays and Paper 2 data response on a shared screen in real time, annotate diagrams live, and match you to a true IB Economics specialist instead of whoever happens to be local. You get the same focused, one-on-one attention with none of the travel.
