AP Calculus AB (Units 1–8)
Limits & continuity, derivatives (definition, rules, applications), Mean Value Theorem, related rates, optimisation, implicit differentiation, integrals (definite, indefinite, Riemann sums), the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, accumulation functions, differential equations and slope fields, applications of integration (area, volume of solids of revolution by disk and washer).
Where students lose marks: related-rates FRQs (setting up the wrong variable), units in optimisation answers, and forgetting to justify continuity before applying the Intermediate Value Theorem. We drill the exact answer pattern — define, differentiate, justify, conclude — until it's automatic.
AP Calculus BC (Units 1–10)
Parametric, polar and vector-valued functions, arc length, infinite sequences and series, convergence tests (nth-term, geometric, integral, comparison, ratio, alternating series), power series, Taylor and Maclaurin series, Lagrange error bound, radius and interval of convergence.
Where students lose marks: BC is always won or lost on series. Most students can compute a Taylor polynomial — far fewer can justify convergence with the right test, or bound the error correctly. Our BC sessions spend disproportionate time here because the rubric does too.
AP Statistics (Units 1–9)
Exploring categorical and quantitative data, distributions and z-scores, study design (sampling, experiments, bias), probability (random variables, binomial and geometric, Normal model), sampling distributions for means and proportions, confidence intervals (one and two samples, means and proportions), significance tests, chi-square (goodness of fit, independence, homogeneity), inference for slopes of regression lines, and the Investigative Task.
Where students lose marks: AP Stats is the only AP Math where the wording is the maths. "We are 95% confident that..." has to be phrased a specific way. Conditions must be checked before any inference procedure. We teach the template language line by line.
AP Precalculus (Units 1–4)
Polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions and modelling, trigonometric and polar functions, functions involving parameters, vectors and matrices (Unit 4 — assessed in class, not on the exam).
Where students lose marks: modelling questions on Unit 2. Students can manipulate exponentials but freeze when asked to build an exponential model from a context. We rebuild the modelling habit from Unit 1 onwards.
What "Score 5" really means.
A 5 isn't about doing harder math — it's about answering the exam's version of the question. We teach the question, not just the maths.

HOW THE AP MATH EXAMS ARE BUILT
Know the format,
and the maths gets easier.
Every AP Math exam follows the same two-section pattern. Knowing the structure in advance saves more marks than people realise.
AP Calculus AB and BC structure
• Section I: Multiple choice — 45 questions, 105 minutes. Part A (30 questions, no calculator, 60 minutes). Part B (15 questions, graphing calculator, 45 minutes).
• Section II: Free Response — 6 questions, 90 minutes. Part A (2 questions, graphing calculator, 30 minutes). Part B (4 questions, no calculator, 60 minutes).
• Each section is worth 50% of the final score.
AP Statistics structure
• Section I: Multiple choice — 40 questions, 90 minutes. Graphing calculator allowed throughout.
• Section II: Free Response — 6 questions, 90 minutes. Five short-answer FRQs (about 65 minutes total) plus one Investigative Task (about 25 minutes).
• Section I is 50%; Section II is 50% (the Investigative Task alone is 25% of the total exam).
AP Precalculus structure
• Section I: Multiple choice — 40 questions, 80 minutes (split into a no-calculator part and a calculator-active part).
• Section II: Free Response — 4 questions, 60 minutes (split similarly).
Why this matters: Students who only practise full untimed problems are training for a different exam. We run timed section drills weekly so the format becomes muscle memory.

Yes — you can sit AP
even if your school doesn't offer it.
Many of our AP Math students come from schools that don't run AP classes — common across the UK, Europe and India. Here's how it works.
STEP 01
Find a local AP test centre.
AP exams are administered globally at authorised centres. In Europe and the UK, that's typically an international school. In the UAE and Asia, similarly. We help families locate the nearest centre during the trial.
STEP 02
Register as an external candidate.
Most centres accept external candidates; some have a small administration fee and earlier registration deadlines than internal students. We map that timeline backwards from the exam date.
STEP 03
Mentor-led full CED coverage.
Without a school class, the mentor is the class. Lessons, FRQ practice, mock papers, calculator drills — all on a steady weekly rhythm.
STEP 04
Score reporting to universities.
Scores release through the student's College Board account and are sent to chosen universities in the usual way. Sitting AP externally carries no admissions disadvantage.
THE 4-TO-5 JUMP
A 4 is "you know it."
A 5 is "you can prove it under time pressure."
Three things consistently separate AP Math 4s from 5s — and all three are teachable.
1. Rubric-aware writing.
AP rubrics reward specific phrasing, not vibes. "f(x) is continuous because…" must be followed by the right justification. "We reject the null because the p-value is less than 0.05" must connect the p-value to the question's context. 5s write to the rubric; 4s write to the maths.
2. Calculator fluency.
The AP exam expects fluent, fast use of a graphing calculator (TI-84 family or equivalent). Students who hunt menus mid-FRQ lose minutes they can't get back. 5s have practised the keystrokes until they're invisible.
3. Time discipline.
AP Calc gives roughly 15 minutes per FRQ. AP Stats gives roughly 12 minutes per FRQ plus 25 for the Investigative Task. 5s have done enough timed sets to know when to abandon a part and bank the easier marks later.

WHERE THE MARKS LEAK
Five mistakes we see
in nearly every diagnostic.
Skipping justifications.
AP rubrics give marks for the reason, not the answer. "f has a relative minimum at x = 2" earns nothing without "because f'(x) changes from negative to positive at x = 2."
Calculator answers without setup.
Even on calculator-active FRQs, the rubric expects the integral or expression written down before the calculator answer. No setup, no marks.
Stats interpretation in the wrong context.
"We are 95% confident the mean is between X and Y" loses marks if the student doesn't name the population in the question's context. Generic confidence statements don't score.
Convergence tests applied without conditions.
BC students lose marks not for choosing the wrong test, but for skipping the conditions check. The Alternating Series Test needs three conditions stated. Skip one, lose the mark.
Units missing on applied answers.
"The volume is 8" is not a complete answer. "The volume is 8 cubic feet" is. AP exams are explicit about units — rubrics deduct without them.

What's the difference between AP Calculus AB and BC?
AB covers limits, derivatives, integrals and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus — roughly one university semester of calculus. BC covers everything in AB plus parametric, polar, vector-valued functions and infinite series (Taylor and Maclaurin), and is treated as two semesters of college credit. Most universities give more credit for BC.
Is AP Statistics easier than AP Calculus?
Not really — it's different. AP Stats is light on algebraic manipulation but heavy on interpretation and exact wording. Roughly 40% of the exam tests statistical inference, where most marks are lost on language, not maths. Students who like writing often do better in Stats; students who like solving often do better in Calc.
How long does it take to move from a 3 to a 5?
For most students, three to six months of weekly 1-on-1 sessions, paired with consistent FRQ practice, is enough to move one full score band. Earlier starts mean lighter weekly load. We map the timeline in the free trial.
Do you support the new AP Precalculus exam?
Yes. AP Precalculus is fully covered — polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric and polar functions, plus the modelling skills you'll need walking into AP Calculus the following year.
Can my child sit AP if their school doesn't offer it?
Yes. Many of our students self-study AP from schools in the UK, Europe, UAE and India that don't run AP classes. We cover the full CED, run regular timed papers, and walk families through external-candidate exam registration at a local AP test centre.
How do you handle time zones?
Mentors are scheduled to match your local evening or early morning. Whether you're in London, Zurich, Dubai, Singapore or San Francisco, you'll get a fixed weekly slot in your zone.
What happens in the free trial?
A short diagnostic (so we can see where the marks are leaking), a sample teaching block on a unit your child is struggling with, and a written Score-5 plan you keep — whether or not you continue.
How is 1-on-1 different from an AP prep class?
A class moves at the pace of the slowest student in the room. A 1-on-1 mentor moves at your pace, focuses only on your weak units, and gives FRQ feedback on every answer instead of a group rubric.
Do you help with the graphing calculator?
Yes. The AP exam expects fluent use of a graphing calculator (TI-84 family or equivalent). Mentors teach calculator technique alongside the maths — the right keystrokes win easy marks on the calculator-active sections.
Does Educifly support the AP Statistics Investigative Task?
Yes. The Investigative Task is the highest-weighted FRQ on the Stats exam and the one most students under-prepare for. We run targeted sessions on extending familiar inference procedures to unfamiliar contexts — the exact skill the task is built around.
What's the calculator policy on AP Math exams?
A graphing calculator is required on every AP Math exam. Approved models include the TI-84 Plus family, TI-Nspire CX (non-CAS for some sections), and Casio fx-9750/9860 series. On Calculus AB and BC, parts of each section are no-calculator; on Statistics and Precalculus the policy is split by question.
How many AP Math sessions a week do students typically take?
Most students do one or two 60–90 minute sessions a week, scaling up to 2–3 in the eight weeks before the exam. We tune cadence to the student's timeline and target score.
Can a student take both AP Calculus AB and BC?
The College Board treats AB as a subset of BC and reports an "AB sub-score" on the BC exam. Students normally sit one or the other in a given year. We mentor either, and help families choose between them in the trial.
What's a good AP Math score for college admissions?
A 5 is the strongest score and is widely cited by competitive US universities for credit. A 4 is still highly regarded and earns credit at many universities. A 3 is "qualified" and earns credit at some. Specific universities publish their own credit policies — we factor those into the plan.
Are AP scores reported alongside transcripts?
Students choose whether to send AP scores to a university. Most send when scores are 4 or 5. The College Board score-send is separate from the school transcript and is initiated by the student through their College Board account.
Do you cover Free Response Question technique specifically?
Yes — every session ends with an FRQ or part-FRQ, marked the way the AP rubric marks it. We rebuild the answer template until it's automatic: define, justify, calculate, conclude, state units.
Is online AP Math tutoring as effective as in-person?
For maths, often more effective. Live digital whiteboards, on-screen graphing, and shared notes mean the student keeps everything from the session. There's no "I forgot what we did last week" — the work is sitting in their notes.
Does Educifly mentor students for AP Calculus AB self-study after IGCSE or A-Level?
Yes. Strong IGCSE Additional Maths or AS-Level Maths students are well-placed for AP Calculus AB. We bridge the curriculum differences in the first few sessions and then run the AP CED end-to-end.
What if my child is between AP Calculus AB and BC mid-year?
The two exams overlap heavily — switching from AB to BC means adding series, parametrics and polar. We can run the bridge in 4–6 focused sessions and then continue.
Can parents sit in on sessions?
Of course. Most parents drop in occasionally rather than every session — the weekly written progress notes usually carry the load.
