ABOUT IB ENGLISH TUTORING AT EDUCIFLY

IB English rewards analytical precision —
not just a love of reading

Most students arrive at IB English thinking it's a "reading subject." It isn't. The Individual Oral, Paper 1's unseen commentary, Paper 2's comparative essay and the HL Essay each demand a different analytical move — and each is marked against a precise rubric. A grade 7 isn't written by the strongest reader in the room. It's written by the student who learned to read for the criteria.

That's the gap we close.

Educifly pairs you with an IB English specialist who teaches the rubric, not just the texts. Whether you're studying Literature or Language & Literature, sitting HL or SL, aiming to move from a 4 to a 6 or chasing a clean 7 — your tutor builds every session around what your next assessment will be marked on.

WHY CHOOSE EDUCIFLY

Why IB students choose
Educifly for English tutoring

🎓

IB-specialist tutors only

Every Educifly tutor has direct, deep experience with the IB English A syllabus and assessment objectives. No generic English teachers retrained on the side.

📐

Rubric-first teaching

Your tutor works backwards from the marking criteria. Every essay plan, oral rehearsal and commentary drill targets exactly what examiners reward — and skips what they don't.

🧩

Matched, not browsed

We pair you with the right tutor based on your course (Literature vs Language & Literature), level (HL/SL), school, and timezone. You don't scroll through fifty profiles guessing.

💻

Live and interactive

Sessions run over Zoom with shared documents, real-time annotation, oral practice and instant feedback. Not pre-recorded videos. Not generic worksheets.

🌍

Flexible across time zones

Mornings in Asia-Pacific, afternoons in Europe, evenings in the Americas — IB students worldwide find a slot that fits around school, exams and life.

📈

Results you can measure

Most students who commit to weekly sessions move up one or two grade boundaries. Your tutor will tell you honestly what's achievable in your timeframe.

SYLLABUS COVERAGE

Every IB English assessment —
covered in depth

The four IB English assessments test very different skills. We coach each one specifically — with the texts you're studying, on the deadlines you're working to.

01

The Individual Oral (IO)

30% of SL grade · 20% of HL grade · 10-minute recorded presentation

The IO is where the most marks are quietly lost. Students freeze, over-script, or pick a global issue that doesn't actually connect their two texts. Your tutor walks you through it end-to-end: choosing a global issue that genuinely binds your extracts, building a tight analytical arc, rehearsing delivery until it sounds natural, and handling the follow-up discussion with confidence. We run full mock orals with examiner-style feedback.

02

Paper 1: Guided Literary Analysis

Unseen text(s) · Timed exam · Guided questions

Paper 1 punishes students who don't have a process. You get an unseen text and minutes to make sense of it. Your tutor teaches a repeatable approach: spot the key features fast (structure, voice, tone, imagery), form a reading hypothesis, plan in under five minutes, and write a commentary that weaves textual evidence in fluently. We drill it with past papers until nothing on exam day feels new.

03

Paper 2: Comparative Essay

Two studied works · Criterion B & C targeted · Sustained comparison

Paper 2 is won or lost on comparison. Many students write two parallel essays and call it one — examiners notice. Your tutor helps you build flexible essay frames for the likely thematic questions, link paragraphs that actively compare both works, and sharpen the literary terminology that signals confident analysis.

04

The HL Essay (HL Only)

20% of HL final grade · 1,200–1,500 words · Four criteria

The HL Essay rewards depth, not breadth. Your tutor coaches you through every stage: framing a focused literary question, close reading the chosen work, building a sustained argument, refining your academic register, and learning to self-edit for concision — so every paragraph you write earns its place against the criteria.

Frequently asked questions
about IB English tutoring

What is an online IB English tutor?

An online IB English tutor is a specialist who delivers one-on-one coaching to students studying IB English A: Literature or IB English A: Language & Literature. Sessions take place over video call and cover every assessed component — the Individual Oral, Paper 1, Paper 2 and (for HL students) the HL Essay. Online tutoring means you can work with the best IB-specialist tutors regardless of where you live.

What's the difference between IB English A: Literature and Language & Literature?

Literature focuses exclusively on literary texts — novels, poetry, plays and short stories — and builds skills in close reading and literary analysis. Language & Literature adds non-literary texts (advertising, journalism, speeches) and studies how language shapes meaning across media. Both courses are assessed through the IO, Paper 1 and Paper 2, but the texts and analytical lenses differ. Educifly tutors are experienced in both.

What does the Individual Oral involve?

The Individual Oral is a recorded 10-minute presentation, plus a discussion with your teacher, in which you analyse two extracts — one literary and one non-literary in Language & Literature, or two literary in Literature — through the lens of a chosen global issue. It is internally assessed and externally moderated, counting for 30% of the SL grade and 20% of the HL grade. Strong IO preparation is about text selection, a sharp global issue, a tight structure, and rehearsal.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your starting grade, target grade and how far away your assessments are. Students who begin a term or more before exams see the strongest results with weekly sessions. Students preparing for an imminent IO or final paper often benefit from an intensive block of two to three sessions per week. Your tutor will recommend a plan in your first conversation.

What grade improvement can I expect?

Most Educifly students who commit to regular sessions move up at least one grade boundary — for example a 5 to a 6, or a 6 to a 7. Results depend on how many sessions you attend, how actively you work between sessions, and where you're starting from. Your tutor will be honest about what's realistic given your timeline.

Do you tutor both IB English HL and SL?

Yes. Educifly tutors both Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) IB English students. The core components overlap, but the HL Essay is HL-only and the weighting of components differs between levels. Your tutor will tailor every session to your specific level and syllabus.

How do the online sessions actually work?

Sessions run on Zoom and typically last 60 to 90 minutes. Your tutor will share a Google Doc or whiteboard so you can collaborate in real time — annotating texts, planning essays or rehearsing your oral together. You receive written session notes afterwards so you always know what to work on next.

Can my tutor help with the texts I'm studying at my school?

Yes. Once we match you, your tutor builds sessions around your school's prescribed works, your teacher's deadlines, and the questions most likely to appear on your papers. You're not working through a generic curriculum — you're working through yours.

How do I find the best online IB English tutor for my course?

Tell us your course — IB English A: Literature or Language & Literature — your level (HL or SL), and your upcoming assessments. We match you with an online IB English tutor who specialises in exactly that, so no session is spent on the wrong rubric. You meet them in a free trial before committing.
