Is IB Harder Than AP? A Subject-by-Subject Comparison

Quick answer: Yes, the full IB Diploma is harder than a set of AP classes, because it is a two-year programme with six subjects, three extra core projects and coursework in every subject. But a single IB class is not always harder than its AP twin. IB Math AA HL is tougher than AP Calculus BC. AP Chemistry is at least as tough as IB Chemistry HL. AP exams are shorter and mostly multiple choice. IB exams are longer, mostly written, and spread over four weeks. The honest answer changes subject by subject, and this post goes through every major pair with real exam formats and real pass rates.

Most articles on this question say "it depends on the student" and stop there. True, but not useful. So we did the work: official exam lengths from the IB's May 2026 schedule and the College Board's 2027 exam pages, the 2026 AP score distributions, and the IB's May 2025 subject results, with the matching subjects side by side.

Quick definitions. AP (Advanced Placement) is a set of single college-level courses run by the College Board in the United States. IB (International Baccalaureate) runs the Diploma Programme (DP), a full two-year curriculum for ages 16 to 18, taught in over 150 countries. Is IB harder than AP? The short version

The IB Diploma is harder than AP as a programme, and roughly equal to AP class by class. Here is the whole argument in one table.

The table already tells you the main thing. IB is harder because of its breadth and its coursework, not because each class is a monster. AP lets a strong student go deep in four or five subjects and skip the rest.

Why the full IB Diploma is harder than a set of AP classes

The IB Diploma is harder mainly because nothing is optional. Every IB student takes six subjects across six groups, writes a 4,000-word Extended Essay, completes Theory of Knowledge (TOK, a course in how we know things, assessed by a 1,600-word essay and an exhibition), and logs 18 months of Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). All of that happens on top of the six subjects.

An AP student picks courses one at a time. A student who hates writing can take AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, AP Chemistry and AP Computer Science A and never write an essay. An IB student who hates writing still takes a literature course, a second language, a humanities subject, TOK and the Extended Essay. That is the biggest reason IB feels harder to more students.

Then there is the coursework. Every IB subject has an Internal Assessment (IA), which is a project marked by the teacher and checked by the IB. In Math it is a 12 to 20 page exploration worth 20% of the grade. In the sciences it is a lab investigation worth 20%. In History it is a 2,200-word study worth 20% at HL. In English A Literature HL there is an individual oral worth 20% and an HL essay worth another 20%. AP courses have no compulsory coursework at all in most subjects. The exam is the whole score.

Add it up. A full IB Diploma student produces six IAs, an Extended Essay, a TOK essay, a TOK exhibition and a CAS portfolio across two years. An AP student taking six APs produces six exams.

Why a single IB class is not always harder than its AP twin

Class by class, IB and AP are closer than the reputation suggests, and in some subjects AP is harder. The IB's own results data proves it. In May 2025, 16.4% of Math AA HL students scored a 7, and 19.2% of Physics HL students did. Those are not the pass rates of a course designed to crush people.

Three things make single AP classes hard in their own way:

• The exam is everything. There is no IA to cushion a bad day. AP Chemistry is 3 hours 15 minutes, once, and that is your score.

• AP courses are one year. IB HL subjects get 240 teaching hours over two years and SL subjects get 150. Many AP courses cover a similar amount of content in a single school year. AP Chemistry and AP Physics C are the clearest examples.

• Pacing varies by school. The College Board sets the exam, not the teaching. Some AP classes are taught like college courses; some are not. IB classes follow a published syllabus with set hours.

So the programme is harder in IB, and the single course can be harder in either. Now the exams themselves.

IB exams vs AP exams: format, length and marking

IB exams are longer, more written, and spread over more days than AP exams. Here is how the two systems build their tests.

AP exams follow one pattern. Section I is multiple choice. Section II is free response: essays, problem solutions or, in languages, spoken answers. Most exams run 2 to 3 hours and 15 minutes. There is no penalty for a wrong multiple-choice answer, so guessing is fine. From the 2027 exams, every AP exam is digital: either fully on screen in the Bluebook app, or "hybrid", where the multiple choice is on screen and the written answers are handwritten in a booklet.

IB exams come as two or three "papers" per subject, usually on consecutive days. Most papers are entirely written. Multiple choice appears only in Paper 1A of the sciences. Languages have separate listening and reading papers plus a recorded oral. History HL has three essay papers. Papers are still handwritten in almost all subjects, with on-screen exams being piloted.

Here are the exact exam lengths for the most common subject pairs, taken from the IB's published May 2026 schedule and the College Board's 2027 exam pages.

Two things jump out. IB exam time is longer in every pair, sometimes by two hours. And the multiple-choice share is the real difference: on AP Microeconomics, two thirds of the score comes from 60 multiple-choice questions, while on IB Economics HL every mark comes from written answers. A student who is quick and accurate on multiple choice will find AP kinder. A student who thinks better on paper will find IB kinder.

Marking differs too. AP raw scores convert to a 1 to 5 scale, and the College Board calls 3 and above "qualified". IB subjects are graded 1 to 7 on boundaries set each session; six subject grades plus up to 3 core points give a total out of 45, and you need 24 points plus a clean set of conditions to be awarded the Diploma.

Pass rates: what the numbers say about difficulty

The numbers say that IB and AP fail students at similar rates overall, but the hardest subjects sit in different places. Here are the official figures.

AP, 2026 exams. The College Board publishes the share of students scoring 3 or higher on every exam. Across the big subjects: AP Calculus BC 82%, AP Calculus AB 65%, AP Statistics 62%, AP Physics C: Mechanics 72%, AP Physics 1 68%, AP Chemistry 75%, AP Biology 71%, AP English Literature 73%, AP US History 74%, AP World History 66%, AP Microeconomics 68%, AP Psychology 74%, AP Spanish Language 83%, AP Computer Science A 66%.

IB, May 2026 session. The global Diploma pass rate was 82.61%. The average total score was 30.88 out of 45, and the average subject grade was 4.93 out of 7. Roughly 1 in 6 diploma candidates fails to be awarded the Diploma, usually on the total points or a failing condition rather than one exam.

Those headline rates are not directly comparable: an AP "3" is a lower bar than an IB "4", and different students sit each exam. What is comparable is the pattern inside each system: which subjects hand out top grades, and which do not.

Read the top-grade columns and a clear story appears. In IB, the essay subjects are where 7s go to die: only 1.5% of English A Literature HL students and 2.6% of History HL students got a 7. In AP, the top score is spread far more evenly, and 46% of Calculus BC students got a 5. If your child is chasing top grades, the hard part of IB is the humanities and the hard part of AP is the sciences and statistics.

IB vs AP subject by subject

Now the part nobody else writes: each pair, what the IB course asks, what the AP course asks, and which one is harder.

Math: IB Math AA HL vs AP Calculus BC

IB Math AA HL is harder than AP Calculus BC. Calculus BC is a calculus course. It covers limits, derivatives, integrals, differential equations, series and parametric and polar functions, and it does them well. Math AA HL covers all of that calculus plus proof by induction, complex numbers, vectors in three dimensions, probability distributions and statistics, over 240 hours. Then it adds Paper 3, a 1 hour 15 minute paper of long, unfamiliar problems, and a 20% IA exploration.

The exam formats tell the same story. Calculus BC is 3 hours 10 minutes, half multiple choice, with a calculator allowed on parts of both sections. Math AA HL is 5 hours 15 minutes over three papers, no multiple choice, and Paper 1 is done with no calculator at all. The top-grade rates look similar (16.4% of 7s versus 46% of 5s), but a 5 in BC is a much wider band than a 7 in AA HL.

Math: IB Math AA SL vs AP Calculus AB, and Math AI SL vs AP Statistics

IB Math AA SL and AP Calculus AB are close in difficulty, with AB slightly harder on calculus and AA SL wider in scope. AB covers the first two thirds of BC in one year. AA SL spreads a lighter calculus load across two years but adds functions, trigonometry, statistics and the IA. Their pass profiles are almost identical: 9.2% of 7s in AA SL, 20% of 5s and 65% of 3+ in AB.

Math AI SL versus AP Statistics is the surprising one. Math AI SL had the lowest average grade of any large IB subject in May 2025, at 3.9 out of 7, and only 4.0% of its 42,968 students scored a 7. AP Statistics has the lowest 3+ rate of the major AP math exams at 62%, with 21% of students scoring a 1. Both courses attract students who want the smallest dose of math, and both punish weak algebra. Neither is the "easy option" it looks like. Physics: IB Physics HL vs AP Physics C and AP Physics 1

AP Physics C: Mechanics is harder than IB Physics HL on mechanics, and IB Physics HL is harder overall because it covers far more. Physics C is calculus-based. Every IB physics course, including HL, is algebra-based. So on a rotating-body problem, the AP student is expected to integrate; the IB student is not.

But Physics C: Mechanics is only mechanics. IB Physics HL covers mechanics, thermal physics, waves, fields, electricity and magnetism, nuclear and quantum physics, in 240 hours, with a 2 hour Paper 1 (multiple choice plus data analysis) and a 2 hour 30 minute Paper 2 of written problems, plus a 20% IA. To match that breadth in AP you would take Physics C: Mechanics and Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, which is two exams of 3 hours each, or Physics 1 and Physics 2.

Results back this up. Physics HL had the best 7 rate of any big IB science at 19.2%, because its students are a confident, self-selected group. Physics C: Mechanics had a 72% 3+ rate and 20% of 5s, and Physics 1 had 68% and 19%. If you want a rule of thumb: Physics 1 is easier than IB Physics SL, IB Physics HL sits between Physics 1 and Physics C, and Physics C is the hardest single physics exam of the lot. Chemistry: IB Chemistry HL vs AP Chemistry

AP Chemistry and IB Chemistry HL are about equal, and many students who have done both say AP is harder per hour. AP Chemistry compresses a college general chemistry course into one year and tests it in 3 hours 15 minutes: 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, then 7 free-response questions in 105 minutes. IB Chemistry HL spreads a slightly wider syllabus over two years, in a 2 hour Paper 1 and a 2 hour 30 minute Paper 2, with a 20% IA.

The grades say roughly the same thing. Chemistry HL had a 4.8 average and 15.0% of 7s in May 2025. AP Chemistry had 15% of 5s and 75% of 3+ in 2026. The difference is where the pain sits. AP Chemistry hurts because of speed and because there is no IA to soften a bad exam. IB Chemistry HL hurts because of volume and the precision of the written answers. Biology: IB Biology HL vs AP Biology

IB Biology HL is harder than AP Biology, mostly because of its size. Biology HL is the biggest syllabus in the IB sciences and its results show it: a 4.5 average and only 7.2% of 7s in May 2025, the lowest top-grade rate of the three HL sciences. AP Biology, by contrast, cut content in 2013 to focus on big ideas and data skills. Its exam is 3 hours, with 60 multiple-choice questions and 6 free-response questions, and 71% of students scored 3 or higher in 2026.

AP Biology leans on interpreting data and experiments. IB Biology HL leans on recalling and explaining a large body of content in precise written answers across 4 hours 30 minutes of papers. Students who enjoy the detail do fine in IB. Students who prefer reasoning from a graph do better in AP.

English: IB English A Literature HL vs AP English Literature

IB English A Literature HL is harder than AP English Literature, and the numbers are stark. Only 1.5% of English A Literature HL students earned a 7 in May 2025, the lowest top-grade rate of any large IB class. AP English Literature gave 16% of students a 5 and 73% a 3 or higher in 2026.

Why the gap? AP English Literature is a 3-hour exam: 55 multiple-choice questions worth 45%, then three essays worth 55%. IB English A Literature HL has no multiple choice at all. Paper 1 is 2 hours 15 minutes of guided analysis on unseen texts. Paper 2 is a 1 hour 45 minute comparative essay on studied works. Then there is a 1,200 to 1,500 word HL essay and a 15-minute individual oral, each worth 20%. IB asks for more writing, more works studied, and it holds the top band very tight. If your child is a strong writer, IB rewards them more. If they are not, AP is the safer place to be.

History: IB History HL vs AP US History and AP World History

IB History HL is harder than AP US History or AP World History: Modern. History HL is three essay papers totalling 5 hours: a 1-hour source paper, a 1 hour 30 minute world history paper, and a 2 hour 30 minute regional paper with three essays. Then a 2,200-word IA worth 20%. Only 2.6% of its 37,228 students got a 7 in May 2025, and one in five finished on a grade 3 or below.

AP US History is 3 hours 15 minutes: 55 multiple-choice questions, 3 short answers, a document-based question and one long essay. Multiple choice is 40% of the score. World History: Modern uses the same format. Both had healthy pass rates in 2026: 74% and 66% scoring 3 or higher. The document-based question is a real skill, and AP history students learn to write fast. But nothing in AP asks a 17-year-old for three timed essays in a single 2 hour 30 minute sitting.

Economics: IB Economics HL vs AP Microeconomics and Macroeconomics

IB Economics HL is harder than either AP Economics exam, but easier than its own reputation. AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics are each 2 hours 10 minutes: 60 multiple-choice questions worth 66% and 3 free-response questions worth 33%. They are among the shortest AP exams. In 2026, 68% of Micro students and 66% of Macro students scored 3 or higher.

IB Economics HL covers micro, macro, international and development economics in 240 hours and tests it in three written papers totalling 4 hours 45 minutes, including a 1 hour 45 minute policy paper that is HL only. Yet Economics HL had one of the highest averages of any major IB subject at 5.2 in May 2025. The content is manageable; the writing demand is what makes it HL.

Languages: IB Spanish B HL vs AP Spanish Language and Culture

AP Spanish Language and Culture and IB Spanish B HL are roughly equal, with different strengths. From 2027 the AP exam starts with a free-response section built around a project students prepare before exam day: a 3-minute presentation, a recorded Q&A and a 55-minute argumentative essay. Then 55 multiple-choice questions on listening and reading. Total time is about 2 hours 30 minutes, and 83% of students scored 3 or higher in 2026, the highest of the big exams.

IB Spanish B HL has a 1 hour 30 minute writing paper, a 1-hour listening paper, a 1-hour reading paper, and a 12 to 15 minute individual oral on one of two set literary works. Language B courses post high grades in the IB too, partly because many students already speak the language at home. Pick by format: AP if your child speaks confidently, IB if they write well.

Psychology and Computer Science

IB Psychology and AP Psychology are close, and both are being redesigned. AP Psychology moved to a 2 hour 40 minute digital exam in 2025: 75 multiple-choice questions worth 67% and 2 free-response questions worth 33%. IB Psychology has a new syllabus with first exams in May 2027, including a new IA in the form of a 2,200-word research proposal and a source-based Paper 3 at HL. Until a session of results exists, treat both as medium difficulty.

Computer Science is where AP is the more predictable choice. AP Computer Science A is a 3-hour Java exam, 42 multiple-choice and 4 free-response questions, with a 66% 3+ rate in 2026. IB Computer Science also has a new syllabus for May 2027, built around a 35-hour "computational solution" project. For a stable, well-documented course this year, AP CS A is the safer bet.

Workload: the calendar is the real difference

The biggest difference between IB and AP is not any single exam but what the two years look like. Here is a typical calendar for each.

Look at the exam hours row. Six AP exams at about 3 hours each is 18 hours. Six IB subjects is a little more, perhaps 22 hours, because papers are longer and HL math and history have three of them. Exam weeks are hard in both systems.

The rows above it are the difference. An IB student is producing assessed work in every term for two years. An AP student has content-heavy classes and then one fortnight of exams. This is why IB students call the programme "always on", and why an IB student who plans well can feel less pressure than an AP student the week before exams. The stress is spread out in IB and concentrated in AP.

Which is harder for your child? Five quick tests

The harder programme is the one that fights your child's strengths, so test the fit before you test the difficulty. Ask these five questions.

1. Do they write easily? IB has no way around essays: literature, a second language, a humanity, TOK and the EE. A reluctant writer will find every one of those harder than the equivalent AP multiple choice.

2. Do they need a narrow focus? A future engineer who wants Calculus BC, both Physics C exams, Chemistry and CS A can build that in AP. IB will make them take a language and a humanity at the same time.

3. Do they perform on one big day? AP is 100% exam. IB is 70–80% exam with coursework as a cushion. Students who freeze in exams often score better in IB.

4. Can they manage long projects? The Extended Essay, six IAs and CAS reward students who plan and start early. Students who leave things late suffer more in IB than anywhere else.

5. What does their school actually teach well? An AP course is as good as its teacher, because the College Board sets only the exam. IB classes follow a fixed syllabus and set hours, so quality is more even. Ask older students at the school before deciding anything.

If the answers are "yes, no, no, yes", IB is the right kind of hard. If they are "no, yes, yes, no", AP is. Most students sit somewhere in between, and that is fine.

What universities think of IB vs AP difficulty

Universities treat IB and AP as equally rigorous and judge performance inside whichever one the school offers. US admissions officers look for "the most demanding programme available", and both count. The full Diploma carries slightly more weight than a scattering of AP classes because it signals breadth and sustained workload, but three or four strong APs signal the same thing.

Credit is where the systems differ. Most US universities give credit for AP scores of 3, 4 or 5 through published policies you can check in the College Board's credit policy search. IB credit is usually for HL subjects at grade 5 or above, and policies vary more. Outside the US, IB is more widely understood: UK, European, Canadian and Asian universities publish IB entry requirements for every course, and AP is accepted too, usually as three or more exams at 4 or 5.

The practical rule: choose the programme your child will score well in. A 40-point Diploma and five AP 5s are both excellent. A 28-point Diploma from a student who should have taken four targeted APs is the outcome to avoid.
