ONLINE IB TUTORING

THE REAL CHALLENGE
Plenty of tutors say they teach the IB far fewer actually know it
The IB is not a harder version of another exam. It marks differently, and it asks students to explain their thinking in ways other courses never do. Most tutoring simply isn’t built for it. Here is what families tell us before they come to us.
They know the subject, not the course
A good scientist or mathematician can explain the topic. That is not the same as knowing command terms, mark schemes, or how IB marks are actually awarded.
Nobody helps with the core
The internal assessment, the Extended Essay and TOK carry real marks. Most tutoring skips all three and only revises for the written papers.
Six subjects, all at once
The IB runs six subjects plus the core side by side. When one slips there is no quiet term to catch up in, so small gaps turn into big ones fast.
WHAT IT IS
What IB tutoring actually covers and what good IB tuition should include
IB tutoring is one-to-one teaching built around the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Good IB tuition covers three things: the subject content at the right level, Higher or Standard; the exam technique the IB rewards, which means command terms, working shown and reasoning explained; and the core — the internal assessment, the Extended Essay and TOK. Tutoring that only covers the first is doing a third of the job.
That is the standard we hold every tutor to. An IB online tutor should be able to open your child’s actual coursework and tell them where the marks are — not just re-teach the textbook. If you want the full picture of what the Diploma includes, our guide to IB subjects breaks it down properly.
WHY ONLINE
Looking for an “IB tutor near me”? For online lessons, what matters is your timezone
Searching for an IB tutor near me makes complete sense. But the IB is a small, specialist world, and the right tutor for your child’s subject is rarely on your street. Online lessons remove that limit. IB online tutoring means your reach is no longer set by your postcode. Families searching for IB tuition online usually want the same thing in the end: the best tutor for the subject, at a time that fits a school night.

YOUR TUTOR
Who teaches your child and what an hour actually looks like
Every student is matched with a specialist, not a generalist who covers everything. The same IB DP tutor stays with your child across both years — first teaching the course, then working as an IB exam preparation tutor in the final months. Booking a 1-on-1 IB tutor online starts with a free trial lesson, so you can see the fit before anything is agreed.
🎓
Subject specialists
Each tutor teaches one or two IB subjects, not the whole curriculum. Degree-level in their subject, with years of IB Diploma teaching behind them.
📝
Fluent in how the IB marks
Comfortable across HL and SL, command terms, mark schemes and the internal assessment, so nothing about the course catches them out.
🛡️
Vetted, trained, then matched
Every tutor meets the same standard before they teach a single Educifly student, and is matched to your child by subject and level.
A typical lesson
1
We start with your child’s own work
A past paper, an IA draft, a topic that will not land. Never a generic worksheet.
2
We work it live on a shared screen
The tutor marks as you go, so your child sees exactly where marks are won and lost.
3
Your child explains it back
In their own words. This is the step most tutoring skips, and it is the one that makes it stick.
4
A short written summary afterwards
What was covered, what to practise, what comes next. Parents get it too.
EVERY SUBJECT
Every IB Diploma subject, with a specialist for each one
Every IB Diploma tutor on our team teaches one or two subjects, not all of them. Pick the subject your child needs and go straight to it — each page explains how we teach it, what the assessment looks like, and how to start.

HL OR SL
What actually changes between HL and SL
Every Diploma student takes three subjects at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. The difference is not simply “harder”. The teaching hours, the depth expected and the exam papers all change — which is why an IB tutor for HL works differently from an IB tutor for SL.
TAUGHT HOURS
HL
About 240 across two years
SL
About 150 across two years

HL

SL

EXAM PAPERS
HL

SL
Usually two
WHAT’S EXPECTED
HL
Explain, evaluate and justify
SL
Apply and explain clearly
INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
HL
Same task, judged against a higher bar
SL
Same task, standard bar
WHERE TUTORING HELPS MOST
HL
HL-only topics and long-answer reasoning
SL
Locking down the core and exam timing
USUAL TUTORING RHYTHM
HL
Weekly across both years
SL
Focused blocks before assessments
We match the tutor to the level, not just the subject. A student can be comfortable at SL in one subject and need weekly HL support in another — that is normal, and we plan for it.
THE CORE
The three pieces most tutoring leaves out
Alongside six subjects, every Diploma student completes three core pieces. Together, the Extended Essay and TOK are worth up to 3 points of the final 45 — and a failing grade in either can put the whole Diploma at risk. We coach all three.
📊
The internal assessment (IA)
Coursework set in every subject, marked by your child’s teacher and then moderated by the IB. It is typically worth 20–30% of the subject grade. We coach the plan, the method and the redrafts.
📜
The Extended Essay (EE)
A 4,000-word independent research essay, graded A to E. Most students lose time picking a question that cannot actually be answered. We fix that first, then guide structure, sources and redrafting.
💡
Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
A 1,600-word essay on one of six prescribed titles, plus the exhibition. We coach knowledge questions, argument and counterclaim until your child can hold their own line.
One rule across all three: we coach, we never ghost-write. Every word your child submits stays their own — an essay they can defend as entirely theirs. Stuck for a starting point? Try our free IB IA Topic Generator, or browse Extended Essay topic ideas by subject.

WHAT FAMILIES SAY
Real progress, in real families’ words
We’d tried two tutors who knew Chemistry but not the IB. Within a fortnight the difference in how the IA was handled was obvious.

WHY WE EXIST
Built by an IB educator, not a marketplace
Educifly began with a simple problem. As an IB Mathematics educator, Richa watched bright, capable students lose marks — not because they lacked ability, but because nobody was teaching them the way the IB actually works. Real subject-specialist IB tutoring was hard to find, and harder still to find close to home.
She built Educifly to fix that. Today that means hand-picking a specialist for every Diploma subject, training them to one standard, and bringing them to your child online. A student in Geneva, Dubai or Mumbai gets the same quality of teaching as one at a top international school anywhere in the world.

Richa Jain
Founder, Educifly · IB Mathematics Educator
Richa teaches IB Mathematics herself — and hand-picks and trains the specialist who teaches every other Diploma subject.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
IB tutoring, your questions answered
How much does an IB tutor cost?
It depends on the subject, the level and how often you meet — an SL revision block and weekly HL support are very different commitments. We give you a clear quote after the free trial lesson, once we know what your child actually needs. No card is needed to try.
Do IB tutors need to be IB-trained?
There is no single licence, so anyone can call themselves an IB tutor. That is exactly why it matters. Ask whether they have taught the Diploma, whether they know command terms and mark schemes, and whether they have coached an internal assessment through to submission. Every Educifly tutor has.
How many hours of IB tutoring does a student need?
Most students do one hour a week per subject, which is enough to stay ahead and fix problems while they are still small. Students rebuilding after a weak term, or working through a hard HL topic, often do two. Before exams, families usually add short focused blocks.
When should you start IB tutoring?
The most useful moment is the start of DP1, when study habits are still forming and the internal assessments are all still ahead. Most families start later, when a grade slips or a deadline looms. Both work — starting early is simply cheaper in effort, because nothing has to be undone.
Can a tutor help with the IA and Extended Essay?
Yes, and it is one of our most requested areas. We coach the planning, the method, the structure and the redrafts, and we give honest feedback on your child’s own drafts. We never write any of it. The work has to stay theirs — the IB requires that, and so do we.
What is the difference between HL and SL tutoring?
Higher Level carries about 240 taught hours against Standard Level’s 150, plus HL-only topics and usually an extra exam paper. So HL tutoring leans on those extra topics and long-answer reasoning, while SL tutoring focuses on locking down the core syllabus and getting exam timing right.
Is online IB tutoring as effective as in person?
For the IB, it is usually better. Your child gets a true subject specialist instead of whoever happens to live nearby, there is no travel, and we work live on their actual coursework on a shared screen. Every lesson is one-to-one, so nothing is diluted by a group.
Can tutoring raise an IB predicted grade?
It can, indirectly. Predicted grades come from your child’s teacher, based on classwork, mocks and internal assessments. Tutoring improves the evidence that prediction is built on. What it cannot do is change a prediction directly — only the school can do that, and only from the work itself.
Ready to find the right IB tutor?
Book a free trial lesson. We’ll meet your child, look at what they find hard, and show you exactly how we’d help — no cost, no commitment.
