THE REAL CHALLENGE

The IA is hard because no one explains
how it's marked

The Internal Assessment is the part of the IB that students lose the most easy marks on. Not because the work is beyond them, but because it's open-ended, the criteria are abstract, and most students start without a clear idea of what a top-band IA actually looks like.

Choosing a topic eats up weeks

A vague or over-ambitious question is the single biggest reason IAs underperform. Students stall for weeks, then rush the research with no time to spare.

The criteria are written in IB code

"Evaluation", "personal engagement", "analysis" each mean something specific in the rubric. Knowing your subject isn't enough if you can't show it the way the criteria demand.

No real feedback until it's too late

Teachers are stretched across whole classes and limited in the feedback they're allowed to give. Most students only learn what was missing after the mark is already locked in.

What is the IB Internal Assessment?

"IA" means something slightly different in every subject — but the idea is the same. Here's what it is, what it's worth, and where students gain or lose marks.

What the IA is

The Internal Assessment (IA) is the coursework component of an IB Diploma subject — a piece of independent work you research, write and submit during the course. It is marked by your own teacher against IB's published criteria and then moderated by the IB to keep standards consistent worldwide. Unlike the final exams, the IA is done over weeks, in your own time, which is exactly why planning and structure matter so much.

What it's worth

In most subjects the IA counts for 20% to 30% of your final grade for that subject. That weighting is decided before you sit a single exam — so a strong IA effectively banks marks and takes the pressure off your papers. It's one of the few parts of the IB where you control the outcome with preparation rather than exam-day nerves.

What it looks like by subject

The format changes with the subject: a Scientific Investigation in Biology, Chemistry and Physics; the Exploration in Maths AA and AI; a commentary portfolio in Economics; a research project in Business Management; a historical investigation in History; an experimental report in Psychology; and oral or written tasks in Languages. Different shapes, same goal — independent work, judged against criteria.

WHY ONLINE WORKS

Why online IB IA help
works so well

An IA is personal work, so generic advice rarely helps. One-to-one online sessions let a subject specialist read your draft, share their screen, and rebuild your research question, structure and analysis with you — line by line, on your timeline.

A specialist for your exact subject

Whether it's a Chemistry investigation or a History essay, you work with someone who knows that subject's criteria from the inside, not a generalist.

We work on your actual draft

Live, on a shared screen, we mark your IA against the rubric, show you where the bands break, and fix the wording together in real time.

Built around where you're stuck

Topic stage, data analysis, evaluation or final polish — we meet you exactly where the IA is and move it forward from there.

Fits around deadlines and mocks

Sessions slot around your IA submission dates, exams and the rest of your Diploma. Reschedule when the timetable gets heavy.

HOW IT WORKS

How IB IA help works,
step by step

A clear path, shaped entirely around your subject, your topic and the criteria your grade needs most.

1

Find a topic that scores

We help you choose a focused, researchable question — the decision that quietly determines your ceiling. Stuck for ideas? Start with our free IB IA Topic Generator, then refine it together.

2

Plan the structure

We map your IA to the assessment criteria from the start, so every section is written to earn marks rather than reverse-engineered at the end.

3

Draft, review, refine

You write; we review against the rubric and give the specific, band-by-band feedback that pushes the work up — research, analysis, evaluation and reflection.

4

Final polish for the criteria

A last pass on wording, presentation and the criteria most students leave marks on, so the IA you submit is the strongest version of your work.

WHAT WE COVER

IB IA help for
every subject

Every subject's IA is judged differently, so every student is matched to a specialist in theirs. These are the IAs we support most.

Sciences — the Investigation

Biology, Chemistry and Physics IAs: research question, variables, method, data analysis, uncertainties and evaluation, all built for the criteria.

Maths AA & AI — the Exploration

A focused mathematical topic explored with genuine personal engagement, valid reasoning and clear communication, not just textbook problems.

Business & Economics

The Business Management research project and the Economics commentary portfolio, with real-world theory applied and analysed the way the rubric expects.

History & Psychology

The historical investigation with its source evaluation, and the Psychology experimental report from hypothesis to discussion.

Languages & Literature

Oral and written IA tasks across Language A and B, structured to show analysis, interpretation and command of the language.

Topic & research-question coaching

Stuck before you've even started? We specialise in turning a vague idea into a sharp, scoreable research question for any subject.

YOUR MENTOR

Meet
your IB IA mentor

You'll be matched with a tutor who specialises in your subject and has guided real IAs through the criteria — not a generalist reading the rubric for the first time with you.

Subject specialists

Each mentor works in their own IB subject, so they know the depth, the common pitfalls, and what separates a mid-band IA from a top one.

They know the criteria

Deep familiarity with how each criterion is awarded — personal engagement, analysis, evaluation, communication — and how moderators read the work.

They coach, they don't ghost-write

Your IA stays yours. Mentors guide, question and give feedback so the thinking and the words are genuinely your own, in line with IB's academic-honesty rules.

WHO IT'S FOR

Help at every stage of your IA

Whether you haven't picked a topic or you're staring at a finished draft that just won't lift, there's a place to start.

The student with a blank page

No topic, no idea where to begin, and the deadline already looming. We turn the panic into a clear, researchable question fast.

The student stuck mid-IA

Topic chosen, but the data analysis or evaluation has stalled. We unblock the hard middle section and rebuild momentum.

The student chasing the top band

A solid draft that's still landing a band below target. We find the specific marks being left behind and close the gap.

The student juggling several IAs at once

Multiple IAs colliding with mocks and the EE. We help you prioritise and produce strong work without burning out.

WHY WE EXIST

Richa Jain

Founder, Educifly · IB Mathematics Educator

Educifly began with a simple problem. As an IB Mathematics educator, Richa watched bright, capable students lose marks on the IA — not because they lacked ability, but because no one had the time to show them how the criteria actually work, or how to turn a rough idea into a research question that scores.

She built Educifly to fix that across every subject. For Internal Assessments, that means hand-picking mentors who specialise in their own subject and know its criteria from the inside — so a student in Geneva, Dubai or Singapore gets genuine, criteria-aware guidance, not generic essay tips. The mission is the same in every subject: real expertise, one student at a time.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Your IB IA
questions, answered

What is the IB Internal Assessment, and how much is it worth?

The Internal Assessment (IA) is the coursework component of an IB Diploma subject — independent work you research and write during the course, marked by your teacher against IB criteria and moderated by the IB. In most subjects it's worth 20% to 30% of your final grade for that subject, so a strong IA banks marks before you sit a single exam.

Which subjects can you help with the IA for?

Every IB subject with an IA — including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths AA and AI, Business Management, Economics, History, Psychology, and Language A and B. You're matched with a mentor who specialises in your exact subject and knows its criteria.

Can you help me choose an IA topic?

Yes — it's where we add the most value. A focused, researchable question is the single biggest factor in your final mark. We coach you to a topic you can actually investigate, and our free IB IA Topic Generator can spark ideas before your first session.

Will you write my IA for me?

No, and that protects you. The IB has strict academic-honesty rules, and the IA must be your own work. We coach, question and give feedback so the ideas and the writing are genuinely yours — guidance that lifts your grade without putting your Diploma at risk.

My IA is due soon and it's not working. Can you still help?

Yes. We start by reading your draft against the criteria to find exactly where the marks are being lost, then focus every session there. Even close to the deadline, targeted work on the highest-impact criteria can move an IA up a band.

My child studies at an international school abroad. Can you still help?

Yes. All sessions are online, so we support IB students with their IAs across Europe, the UAE, Asia and international schools worldwide, including expat families relocating mid-Diploma.

your IA into a top mark?
