The 10 Hardest A-Level Subjects, Ranked by Real Data

Every "hardest A-Levels" list you'll read online was written by someone guessing. They rank Further Maths first because it sounds hard. They put Media Studies last because it sounds easy. Nobody shows you a number.

There are actually numbers. Researchers at Durham University measured how much harder each A-Level is graded, in fractions of a grade, using the exam records of a quarter of a million students. Ofqual, the exam regulator for England, ran its own three-year study on the same question. And every August, JCQ publishes what percentage of students got each grade in each subject.

This guide puts those three things together. You'll get a ranked table of the hardest A Level subjects, the real number behind each one, and — more useful — an honest answer to the question underneath the question. Which is: should my child take one?

Quick answer: The hardest A-Level subjects, measured by how severely they're graded, are Further Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Maths, French, German, Computer Science, Music and Spanish. Durham University research found students score about 0.9 of a grade lower in Chemistry than in Psychology for the same level of ability. The gap between the hardest and easiest A-Level is roughly two full grades. But "hardest" and "worst choice" are not the same thing — most of these subjects open more university doors than the easy ones.

What "hardest A-Level subject" actually means

There are two different questions hiding inside "which A-Level is hardest", and mixing them up is how people get this wrong.

Question one: which subject is graded most severely? In other words, if the same student took two different A-Levels, in which one would they get a lower grade? This can be measured. It has been measured, several times, by several independent methods that agree with each other.

Question two: which subject feels hardest to sit in? That depends on the student. A child who thinks in numbers finds Further Maths easier than an essay on King Lear. A child who reads three novels a month finds English Literature restful and Chemistry brutal.

This guide answers question one first, because it's the one with evidence. Then it deals with question two, because that's the one that decides whether your child is happy for two years.

One more thing to clear up now. A high percentage of A grades in a subject does not mean the subject is easy. It usually means strong students chose it. We'll come back to this with the 2026 numbers, because it's the single biggest mistake parents make when reading results tables.

How we ranked the hardest A Level subjects

The ranking below leans on one main source, checked against two others.

The main source is Relative Difficulty of Examinations in Different Subjects, by Robert Coe and colleagues at the CEM Centre, Durham University, published in July 2008 for SCORE. The team took the national exam records of every A-Level taken in England in one year — 249,000 students — and worked out how each subject graded students of identical general ability. The answer comes out in grade units, where 1.00 means one whole A-Level grade. A positive number means the subject marks you down. A negative number means it marks you up.

Seven different statistical methods were used. They agreed with each other closely, with most correlations above 0.9.

Check one: does it hold over time? Yes. The same team tracked subject difficulty every year from 1994 to 2006. The year-on-year correlation averaged 0.97. From 2002 onwards the rankings barely moved at all. A subject that grades harshly tends to keep grading harshly.

Check two: does the regulator agree? Broadly, yes. In November 2018 Ofqual published the results of a three-year investigation into whether A-Level sciences and modern languages are graded more severely than other subjects. It accepted that statistical measures show a persistent pattern. It decided not to change the grade boundaries anyway — more on that below.

The honest caveat: the Durham figures come from 2006 exam data. A-Levels were reformed in England between 2015 and 2018, so the specifications have changed. Nobody has repeated a study of that size since. Treat the numbers as a reliable map of the terrain, not a satellite photo taken this morning.

Look at rows 1 and 4. Further Maths is the most severely graded A-Level in the country, and 58.6% of the students who took it in 2026 got an A or A*. Biology is graded a lot more gently, and only 27.4% did. That is the cohort effect in one table, and it's why you can't rank difficulty by results alone.

Two subjects were removed from the original research ranking. General Studies scored high on difficulty but was withdrawn as an A-Level and no longer exists. It also didn't fit the statistical model properly — the researchers concluded it was measuring something different from the other subjects. So it's out.

Now, each subject in turn.

1. Further Mathematics — the hardest A-Level, with an asterisk

Further Maths is graded roughly 1.27 grades more severely than the average A-Level. That's the largest figure in the whole study.

It's a second, separate A-Level taken alongside normal Maths. On the Edexcel route it's four papers: two Core Pure and two applied options, each worth 25% and each lasting 90 minutes. The content is genuinely new territory — complex numbers, matrices, proof by induction, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions.

Here's the asterisk. The researchers themselves flagged Further Maths as their least reliable estimate. The two methods they used disagreed by more than one and a half grades. The reason is a ceiling effect: so many Further Maths students score at the very top that the maths runs out of room to measure them. In the study year, 58% of Further Maths candidates were awarded the top grade, and 39% got no grade other than A in any A-Level they took.

So Further Maths is hard, but part of what the number is capturing is that only very strong mathematicians take it in the first place.

Take it if: your child wants Maths, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or Economics at a competitive university. Some Maths degrees require it. Many more quietly prefer it.

2. Chemistry — the most severely graded subject most students actually take

Chemistry sits at +0.96 grade units. Among subjects with mass entry, it is the harshest marker in the country.

This is the source of the study's most quoted finding: over thirteen years of data, students achieved on average 0.9 of a grade higher in Psychology than in Chemistry. Same students. Same ability. Nearly a full grade difference.

Chemistry is hard for a specific reason. It demands three separate skills at once — the abstract reasoning of physics, the memory load of biology, and the algebra of maths. Organic mechanisms need pattern recognition. Equilibria need modelling. Titration calculations need clean arithmetic under time pressure. A student can be strong at two of the three and still stall at a B.

Add the practical endorsement. Every A-Level science student must complete at least 12 required practical activities, assessed by their teacher and reported as pass or not classified. It doesn't affect the A–E grade at all. But many universities require the pass for science degrees, so it's real work with no grade reward.

Take it if: your child wants Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy or Natural Sciences. For most of those it isn't optional.

3. Physics — the smallest cohort of the big three, and the most mathematical

Physics comes in at +0.95, statistically level with Chemistry.

In 2026, 45,800 students took A-Level Physics — barely two-thirds of the Chemistry entry and well under half of Biology. That matters. A small, self-selecting cohort of mathematically confident students still only managed 32.2% at A or above, and 11.4% at A*.

The difficulty is not really the physics. It's the maths inside the physics. Students who take Physics without Maths alongside it usually hit a wall somewhere in the second year, around simple harmonic motion and capacitor discharge, where the algebra stops being optional. Schools rarely say this out loud at options evening.

Take it if: your child wants Engineering, Physics, Architecture or anything with "systems" in the degree title. Take Maths with it. Treat that as a rule, not a suggestion.

4. Biology — the one that surprises people

Biology is graded +0.81 grades more severely than average. Most families are shocked by this. Biology has a reputation as the gentle science.

It isn't. It has the largest content volume of the three sciences and the least forgiving mark schemes. Marks go to precise terminology, and near-enough answers score zero. "The enzyme stops working" earns nothing where "the active site changes shape so the substrate no longer fits" earns two.

It was also the second-biggest science entry in 2026 at 73,925 students, and it produced the lowest A* rate of the three at 9.0%. A wide-ability cohort meeting a strict mark scheme is exactly the combination that produces a low top-grade rate.

Take it if: your child wants Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedical Science, Psychology at a research-heavy university, or Veterinary Science. Warn them early that the essay-style long answers are a technique, and techniques can be taught.

5. Mathematics — the biggest subject in the country, and still severe

Maths grades about half a grade harder than average, at +0.52.

It was the most-entered A-Level in 2026 by a wide margin: 115,380 students, out of 906,425 total UK A-Level entries. Roughly one in eight A-Level entries in the country is Maths.

Despite that scale, 42.1% got an A or above. This is the closest thing to a fair fight in the table — a huge, mixed-ability cohort, in a severely graded subject, still posting strong top-grade numbers. It tells you the subject rewards preparation more predictably than most.

The failure mode is specific. Maths is the subject where a shaky foundation from two years earlier shows up as a D. Students who scraped a grade 7 at IGCSE Maths without really understanding algebraic manipulation almost always struggle in the first term of Year 12. The fix is to go back, not to push forward faster.

Take it if: almost any quantitative degree. Maths is the single most widely required A-Level in UK university admissions.

6, 7 and 10. French, German and Spanish — the severity nobody fixed

Modern foreign languages cluster together: French +0.51, German +0.50, Spanish +0.27.

These three are the reason Ofqual ran its inter-subject comparability programme at all. Subject associations argued for years that language A-Levels were marked so harshly that students avoided them, and that the falling entry numbers proved it. The 2026 figures show how small these cohorts now are: 6,888 for French, 2,294 for German.

Ofqual investigated for three years and published its decision on 21 November 2018. It did not adjust the grade boundaries. Dr Michelle Meadows, then Executive Director for Strategy, Risk and Research, said there was "no such uniformly compelling case to adjust grading standards in these subjects". The regulator did commit to working with exam boards so these subjects don't become more severely graded in future.

One adjustment had already happened. In 2017 Ofqual made a small change to grading in French, German and Spanish A-Levels, to account for the effect of native speakers sitting the exams and pulling the top of the distribution upwards.

So the severity is real, it's officially acknowledged, and it has not been removed.

Take it if: your child is genuinely good at languages and wants to keep the option open. Be aware the small cohorts contain fluent and near-fluent speakers.

8. Computer Science — the newest hard subject

Computer Science grades +0.36 above average, and the 2026 results back that up sharply. Only 25.1% reached A or A*, and 69.0% reached a C or above — one of the lowest C rates of any large subject.

The problem is that it's two subjects wearing one name. Half of it is theory: binary, logic gates, data structures, algorithmic complexity, network protocols. The other half is a substantial programming project. Students who arrive because they enjoy computers, rather than because they enjoy discrete maths, tend to find the theory papers harder than they expected.

Take it if: your child already programs for fun and is comfortable with maths. Do not take it as a "practical" alternative to a science.

9. Music — the hidden workload

Music grades +0.33 above average. It rarely appears on hardest-A-Level lists, which says more about the lists than the subject.

Music asks for three unrelated skills, each assessed separately: performance to a high technical standard, original composition to a brief, and a written exam covering harmony, analysis and set works spanning several centuries. Nothing you do in one part helps you in another. And the practising happens outside timetabled lesson time, so the true workload is invisible on a school timetable.

Take it if: your child already plays at roughly Grade 7 or above and reads music fluently. Not otherwise.

Why top-grade percentages lie

This is worth its own section, because it's the trap in every results-day news story.

Further Maths hands out fifteen times as many A* grades as Media Studies. It is also, statistically, the most severely graded subject in the country. Both facts are true at once.

The explanation is cohort. Almost everyone who takes Further Maths is a strong mathematician who has already chosen Maths. Media Studies takes a much broader spread of students. The grade distribution is telling you who walked into the room, not how hard the exam was.

The same logic explains the subjects with the lowest top-grade rates in 2026 — Accounting at 12.2% A*–A, Statistics at 12.5%, English Language at 12.4%, Environmental Science at 13.3%. On the Durham measure, none of these is a severely graded subject. Their cohorts are simply weaker on average.

If someone shows you a "hardest A-Levels" list built from A* percentages, they have measured the students, not the subject.

Subjects people think are hard — but the data disagrees

Some subjects have a fearsome reputation and a mild grading record. Here's where the popular hard subjects actually sit.

English Literature is the interesting one. It's widely called a hard A-Level, and in one sense it is — the reading load is enormous and the marking is subjective. But statistically, students score higher in it than in the subjects they take alongside it. Hard to do well in, generously graded when you do.

Psychology sits almost exactly at the average, which makes it the natural reference point. When you read that Chemistry is 0.9 grades harder than Psychology, that's the same as saying Chemistry is about 0.9 grades harder than a typical A-Level.

Does taking a hard A-Level actually help?

This is the part parents care about, and the research has an uncomfortable answer.

Universities mostly use the UCAS tariff, which treats an A in Chemistry as identical to an A in Media Studies. The Durham team modelled what happens because of that. If a university tried to select the top 10% of applicants using raw grades, about one in six of the students it picked would not have been picked had subject difficulty been taken into account. Selecting the top 5%, the figure rises to 48%.

Put plainly: the system does not reward your child for choosing the harder subject. Not in the tariff, anyway.

But that isn't the whole picture, and here's where the advice gets practical:

  • Course requirements outrank tariff points. You cannot read Medicine without Chemistry, or Engineering without Maths. A perfect set of grades in the wrong subjects closes those doors permanently.

  • Admissions tutors know the subjects. Departmental staff reading applications are perfectly aware of what an A in Further Maths represents. The tariff is blunt; humans are not.

  • Hard subjects keep options open longer. A 16-year-old who is unsure should weight towards subjects that unlock more degrees, not fewer.

  • A grade you don't get is worth nothing. Three Bs in severe subjects can lose to three As in moderate ones for a course that doesn't require the severe ones.

Ofqual's own research found something worth remembering here. When it asked students what drives their subject choices, perceived difficulty was not the biggest factor. Enjoyment and perceived usefulness mattered more. Teenagers already understand something the league tables don't.

A single A-Level in Chemistry or Further Maths goes deeper than the equivalent IB Higher Level course. But the IB makes your child do six subjects at once, plus a 4,000-word Extended Essay and a Theory of Knowledge course, with no escape from maths or a second language.

If your child is heading for IB Maths Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, treat it as the IB's Further Maths. That is roughly the right expectation to set.

How to survive a hard A-Level

If your child has chosen one of the top-ranked subjects, these are the things that actually change the grade.

1. Fix the foundation before you build on it. Most Year 12 failure in Maths, Physics and Chemistry traces back to a gap from two years earlier. Spend the first half-term on the gap, not on the new content. It feels like going backwards. It isn't.

2. Do past papers from October, not April. The single biggest difference between a B and an A in severe subjects is exam technique, and exam technique only develops through timed papers marked against the real mark scheme.

3. Learn the mark scheme as a document. In Biology especially, the mark scheme is a list of accepted phrases. Read ten of them and the pattern becomes obvious.

4. Three severe subjects is a lot. Chemistry, Physics and Maths together is a genuinely heavy combination. Chemistry, Biology and Maths is heavier still because of the content volume. Consider whether the fourth subject is really needed.

5. Handle the practical endorsement early. It's pass or not classified, it doesn't lift the grade, and universities still ask for it. Get it done rather than letting it drift into exam term.

6. Get help in the first term, not the third. Families usually seek a tutor in February of Year 13, when there are ten weeks left. The same money spent in October of Year 12 buys twenty times the improvement.

7. Check the subject fits the child, not the CV. Two years is a long time to spend on a subject chosen to impress an admissions tutor who will never ask about it.

So which should your child pick?

Work through it in this order.

Start with the degree, if there is one. Medicine needs Chemistry. Engineering needs Maths and usually Physics. Economics at most competitive universities needs Maths. If a course requirement exists, it beats every other consideration on this page.

If there's no clear degree yet, pick for doors, then for enjoyment. Maths opens the most doors of any single A-Level. A science opens the second most. After those two slots, choose what your child actually likes, because that's what they'll revise at eleven o'clock at night in March.

Don't pick three severe subjects to look serious. Grades matter more than the impression the combination makes.

Don't avoid a subject only because it's on this list. Every subject in the top 10 is more useful to a university application than most subjects outside it. Severity and value point in the same direction here, which is inconvenient but true.

If your child is still at IGCSE and choosing subjects, the choices made at 14 quietly narrow what's available at 16. Triple Science and the higher maths tier are the two that matter most.

What is the hardest A-Level subject?

Further Mathematics is the most severely graded A-Level, at about 1.27 grades harder than the average subject in Durham University's research. However, the researchers flagged their own Further Maths figure as unreliable because so many candidates score at the very top that the measurement runs out of room. Among subjects with large, mixed entries, Chemistry is the most severely graded, at roughly 0.96 grades harder than average.

Are the sciences really harder than other A-Levels?

Yes, and this is one of the more settled findings in the research. The Durham study concluded that STEM subjects are "not just more difficult on average than the non-sciences, they are actually without exception among the hardest of all A-Levels". Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Maths all sit in the top five for grading severity. Ofqual reached a similar conclusion in its own three-year review, although it decided not to change the grade boundaries.

Is Chemistry harder than Biology at A-Level?

Yes, by about 0.15 of a grade on the Durham measure — Chemistry at +0.96 versus Biology at +0.81. The difficulty is different in kind, though. Chemistry demands more abstract reasoning and more maths. Biology demands more content memorisation and more precision in written answers. Students who prefer solving problems usually find Chemistry easier; students who prefer learning and explaining usually find Biology easier.

Why did more students get A* in Further Maths than in Media Studies if Further Maths is harder?

Because grade distributions measure the students, not the exam. In 2026, 28.7% of Further Maths candidates got A* compared with 1.9% in Media Studies. Nearly everyone who takes Further Maths is already a strong mathematician who also takes Maths. Media Studies attracts a much wider spread of ability. When you compare the same students across both subjects, Further Maths is graded far more severely.

What are the easiest A-Level subjects?

On the Durham grading measure, the most generously graded A-Levels were Film Studies, Media Studies, Photography, Drama and Sociology — all graded between half a grade and one and a half grades more leniently than average. "Easier to get a good grade in" is not the same as "easy", and it is definitely not the same as "useful for university". Several of these subjects are not accepted as core requirements by competitive courses.

Should my child avoid hard A-Levels to get better grades?

Usually no. The subjects that grade most severely are also the ones most often required for competitive degrees, so avoiding them can close doors permanently. The exception is a student who is realistically heading for D grades in a severe subject and B grades in a moderate one, for a course that doesn't require the severe subject. In that case, choose the grades.

Do universities take subject difficulty into account?

The UCAS tariff does not — it treats an A in every subject as worth the same points. Durham's researchers modelled the effect and found that if a university selected the top 10% of applicants on raw grades, about one in six of those chosen would not have been chosen had subject difficulty been adjusted for. In practice, admissions tutors in specific departments do understand what an A in Further Maths or Chemistry represents, and course entry requirements do the real filtering.

Is A-Level Maths harder than IGCSE or GCSE Maths?

Substantially, and the jump surprises most students. IGCSE and GCSE Maths reward accurate use of learned methods. A-Level Maths requires you to select the right method from a large toolkit and often to combine two or three in one question. Students who scored a grade 7 without solid algebraic fluency struggle most. If that describes your child, close the algebra gap during the summer before Year 12 rather than during the first term.

How many A-Levels should my child take?

Three is the standard, and three strong grades beat four mediocre ones for almost every course. A fourth is worth it only if your child is genuinely comfortable and the subject adds something — most commonly Further Maths alongside Maths for a mathematical degree. Very few UK courses require four A-Levels.

Is Computer Science an easy A-Level because my child is good with computers?

No, and this is one of the more common misjudgements. A-Level Computer Science is largely theory: binary, logic, data structures, algorithmic complexity and networks, with a substantial programming project alongside. In 2026 only 25.1% of candidates reached A or A*, and 31% did not reach a C. Being confident with technology is not the same as being comfortable with discrete maths.

Does the science practical endorsement affect the A-Level grade?

No. Every A-Level science student must complete at least 12 required practical activities, and their teacher reports the outcome as pass or not classified. It sits separately from the A*–E grade and does not raise or lower it. Many universities do require the pass for science degrees, so treat it as compulsory work with no grade attached.

Are these difficulty rankings still accurate?

They are the best evidence available, with a caveat. The main study analysed exam data from 2006, and A-Levels in England were reformed between 2015 and 2018. But the same research tracked subject difficulty every year from 1994 to 2006 and found the rankings extremely stable, with year-on-year correlations averaging 0.97. Ofqual's later review reached compatible conclusions. The ranking is a reliable guide to the pattern rather than an exact measurement of the 2026 papers.

The short version

The hardest A-Level subjects are the sciences, maths and the modern languages. That has been true for thirty years, it has been measured by several independent methods that agree, and the exam regulator has looked at it closely and chosen to leave it alone.

None of that is a reason to avoid them. The severely graded subjects are, almost perfectly, the same list as the subjects competitive universities ask for. The real decision isn't hard versus easy. It's whether your child is prepared for the workload, and whether the support is in place before it becomes urgent rather than after.
