The 12 TOK Concepts Explained (With Examples for the Essay and Exhibition)
Every Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course comes with a list of 12 words. The IB calls them the TOK concepts, and most students meet them in the first week and never think about them again.
That's a mistake. The TOK concepts are the words the IB uses to write the essay titles and the exhibition prompts. If you understand the 12 concepts, you can read a title the way an examiner reads it. If you don't, you end up writing 1,600 words about "knowledge" in general and wondering why the mark is a 4.
This guide explains each TOK concept in plain English, with an everyday example and a knowledge question for each, and shows where each concept has appeared in real essay titles and exhibition prompts. Educifly's TOK coaches use this same list with the students we work with one-to-one.
Quick answer: The 12 TOK concepts are evidence, certainty, truth, interpretation, power, justification, explanation, objectivity, perspective, culture, values and responsibility. The IB's TOK guide says they "have particular prominence within, and thread throughout" the course. You are never examined on them directly. Instead, they appear inside the six prescribed essay titles and the 35 exhibition prompts, so knowing them helps you unpack what a title is really asking. A strong essay or exhibition usually leans on two or three concepts, not all twelve.
What are the TOK concepts?
The TOK concepts are 12 big ideas about knowledge that the IB has picked out as running through the whole Theory of Knowledge course.
They aren't a topic you study for a few weeks and move on from. They are a vocabulary that keeps turning up in every area of knowledge.

Where did they come from? The current TOK course started with first assessment in May 2022. The old course was built around eight "ways of knowing" (reason, emotion, language, sense perception and so on). The new course dropped those and replaced them with the 12 concepts, so students would have one shared set of words to use across every area of knowledge.

Are the 12 TOK concepts assessed?
No. There is no exam question that says "define objectivity". The concepts are assessed indirectly, because they are built into the essay titles and the exhibition prompts.
The TOK essay is worth 67% of your TOK grade. You pick one of six prescribed titles the IB releases for each session, and the concepts sit right in the wording. "Is the power of knowledge determined by the way in which the knowledge is conveyed?" That's power. "To what extent is interpretation a reliable tool in the production of knowledge?" That's interpretation.
The TOK exhibition is worth the other 33%. You pick one of 35 set prompts (the IB calls them IA prompts) and connect three real objects to it. "What counts as good evidence for a claim?" "To what extent is certainty attainable?" The concepts again.
So when a teacher says "use the concepts", they mean: find the concept the title is built on, and make your whole argument about that.

When you get a title or a prompt, the first thing to do is find its row.
The 12 TOK concepts explained one by one
Each concept below gets a plain definition, an everyday example, a knowledge question, and where it has shown up in a real title or prompt.
1. Evidence
Evidence is the information we use to support a claim.
The TOK question is always about what counts. A photo is evidence. So is a lab result, a diary from 1916, or "my grandmother told me". They are not all equally good, and different areas of knowledge accept different kinds.
Everyday example: A friend says a café has the best coffee in town. "I've been there twice" is one kind of evidence. "It has 4.8 stars from 2,000 reviews" is another. Which one convinces you, and why?
Knowledge question: How do we decide when evidence is enough to accept a claim?
Where it shows up: Exhibition prompts 5 and 31. November 2026 essay Title 6 asks how intuition can be valuable "given that it lacks evidence".
The trap: Writing "evidence is important" and stopping. Show what changes when the evidence is weak, missing, or contested.
2. Certainty
Certainty is how sure we can be that something is true.
Mathematics is where students expect certainty, because a proof either works or it doesn't. Then TOK asks: is that certainty about the world, or only about the rules we made up? In the natural sciences, the best theories are the ones that could be proven wrong. Scientists live with uncertainty on purpose.
Everyday example: You know 7 × 8 = 56. You also "know" your bus comes at 8:05. The first is certain. The second is a confident guess. Most knowledge lives closer to the bus than the times table.
Knowledge question: Is certainty a realistic goal in any area of knowledge, or only in mathematics?
Where it shows up: Exhibition prompt 8 ("To what extent is certainty attainable?") and prompt 18. May 2026 essay Title 2 asked whether doubt is central to the pursuit of knowledge, and doubt is certainty flipped over.
The trap: Treating certainty as yes or no. It's a dial, not a switch. Strong essays talk about degrees of certainty.
3. Truth
Truth is whether a claim matches the way things really are.
A statement in mathematics is "true" because it follows from the axioms. A statement in history is "true" if it fits the sources. A painting can feel "true" without stating a single fact. Same word, three different jobs.
Everyday example: "Water boils at 100°C" is true at sea level and false on a mountain. Even simple truths come with conditions attached.
Knowledge question: Does "true" mean the same thing across different areas of knowledge?
Where it shows up: Exhibition prompt 25 ("How can we distinguish between knowledge, belief and opinion?") is a truth question, because the difference between knowledge and belief is whether the thing is actually true. Prompt 13 asks whether current knowledge is an improvement on past knowledge.
The trap: "Everything is relative, so nothing is true." Examiners read that sentence a hundred times a session. Show where truth is stable and where it isn't.
4. Interpretation
Interpretation is how we make sense of what's in front of us.
Two historians can read the same letter and reach opposite conclusions. Even in the natural sciences, raw data doesn't speak for itself. Someone has to decide what it means.
Everyday example: A friend leaves your message on "read" for six hours. Busy? Annoyed? Asleep? The data is one blue tick. The interpretation is everything else.
Knowledge question: Are some types of knowledge less open to interpretation than others?
Where it shows up: That question is exhibition prompt 9, word for word. May 2026 essay Title 6 asked "To what extent is interpretation a reliable tool in the production of knowledge?" with history as a fixed area of knowledge. Interpretation is one of the most-used concepts in essay titles.
The trap: Arguing that interpretation makes knowledge unreliable, full stop. That's half the essay. The other half is how disciplines manage interpretation: peer review, source criticism, shared methods.
5. Power
Power is about who gets to decide what counts as knowledge, who gets to share it, and who gets left out.
Students find this one hardest, because it sounds political. But it's practical. Textbooks are written by someone. Journals decide what gets published. Search engines decide what you see first. All of that shapes what you end up "knowing".
Everyday example: You know more about some countries' history than others because your school chose what to teach. Power shaped your knowledge before you opened a book.
Knowledge question: How does the power of experts, institutions or governments affect what we accept as knowledge?
Where it shows up: Exhibition prompts 22 (the role of experts), 29 ("Who owns knowledge?") and 14. May 2026 essay Title 3 asked whether "the power of knowledge" depends on how it's conveyed.
The trap: Turning the essay into a political rant. Keep it about knowledge: who produced it, who checked it, who spread it, and who benefits.
6. Justification
Justification is the reason we give for believing something.
Philosophers have long described knowledge as "justified true belief". Justification is the third piece. A mathematician wants a proof. A scientist wants a repeatable experiment. A historian wants sources. An art critic wants... well, that's the interesting question.
Everyday example: "It'll rain because the app says 80%" is a justification. "It'll rain because my knee hurts" is also one, just weaker. Both people might be right. Only one had good grounds.
Knowledge question: What counts as a good justification for a claim?
Where it shows up: That question is exhibition prompt 19, exactly as written. Prompt 4 ("On what grounds might we doubt a claim?") is the same idea in reverse.
The trap: Mixing up justification with evidence. Evidence is the raw material. Justification is the argument you build from it. The same evidence can justify two different conclusions.
7. Explanation
Explanation is how we make something understandable, usually by saying why it happened.
"The apple fell" is a description. "The apple fell because of gravity" is an explanation. TOK asks what makes an explanation good, and whether historians "explain" in the same way physicists do.
Everyday example: Your phone died. "It ran out of charge" explains it at one level. "Lithium ions stopped flowing" explains it at another. "You left Instagram open all night" is a third. Which one you want depends on what you're trying to do next.
Knowledge question: What makes a good explanation?
Where it shows up: Exhibition prompt 32, word for word. The IB's own specimen titles included: "When historians and natural scientists say that they have explained something, are they using the word 'explain' in the same way?"
The trap: Assuming the simplest explanation is always best. Sometimes the simple one is just the one we find easiest to remember.
8. Objectivity
Objectivity means keeping personal feelings, wishes and bias out of the knowledge you produce.
The natural sciences are built to chase it: controlled experiments, blind trials, peer review, replication. The human sciences find the same tools harder to apply, because the thing being studied (people) knows it's being studied. History and the arts often accept that a point of view is unavoidable and ask what to do about it.
Everyday example: A referee is supposed to be objective. Fans of both teams will say the referee was biased against them. Total objectivity might be impossible, but some referees are still better than others.
Knowledge question: To what extent is objectivity possible in the production or acquisition of knowledge?
Where it shows up: Exhibition prompt 28, word for word, and prompt 12 ("Is bias inevitable?"). May 2026 essay Title 1 asked whether it matters that observation is "an essential but flawed tool".
The trap: "Nobody can be truly objective, so it doesn't matter." The interesting essay asks which methods get us closer, and how much closer.
9. Perspective
Perspective is the viewpoint you are looking from, and how it shapes what you see.
Perspective is close to interpretation, but not the same. Interpretation is what you do with the information. Perspective is where you were standing when you received it: your age, country, training, language and experience.
Everyday example: Ask three people at the same party what happened. The one who arrived late, the one working the bar and the birthday person each tell a different story. None of them are lying.
Knowledge question: How does the perspective of the knower affect the knowledge they produce?
Where it shows up: November 2026 essay Title 1 asks whether it is good advice to "study the historian before you begin to study their work". Exhibition prompts 20 and 26 are also perspective questions.
The trap: Writing about perspective as if it only applies to history and the arts. Scientists have perspectives too. Which questions get asked depends on who is asking.
10. Culture
Culture is the set of shared beliefs, practices and ways of thinking that a group of people hold in common.
Some cultures pass knowledge on through writing. Some through speech, song or ritual. Some ideas count as common sense in one place and superstition in another. The harder question underneath: is some knowledge only true within a culture, or is only the packaging different?
Everyday example: Some countries write the date as day/month/year. Others use month/day/year. Both groups are certain their way is normal. That's a tiny example of culture shaping what feels obvious.
Knowledge question: What is the relationship between knowledge and culture?
Where it shows up: Exhibition prompt 21, word for word. Prompt 14 links to the optional theme on knowledge and indigenous societies.
The trap: Treating "culture" as a synonym for "people far away". Your school, your family and your online communities are cultures too.
11. Values
Values are the things a person or a group believes matter.
Values shape knowledge in two ways. First, they decide what we bother to find out. Nobody funds research into questions nobody cares about. Second, they shape how we judge what we find. A scientist values accuracy. An artist might value honesty or beauty.
Everyday example: Two students revise for the same exam. One values the top grade. One values understanding the topic. They read the same textbook in completely different ways.
Knowledge question: In what ways do our values affect the production of knowledge?
Where it shows up: Exhibition prompts 34 and 35 are both values questions. Prompt 11 ("Can new knowledge change established values or beliefs?") turns it around.
The trap: Confusing values with opinions. "Fairness matters" is a value. "That referee was unfair" is an opinion.
12. Responsibility
Responsibility is what we owe to others once we know something, or once we set out to find it.
This is the ethics concept. Should some knowledge not be sought at all? Once you know something dangerous, are you responsible for what happens next? One of the seven aims in the IB's TOK guide is to make students think about "values, responsibilities and ethical concerns" in how knowledge is produced and used.
Everyday example: You learn a friend's secret by accident. Are you responsible for keeping it? For telling someone? Knowing something changes what you owe.
Knowledge question: Does all knowledge impose ethical obligations on those who know it?
Where it shows up: Exhibition prompt 27, word for word, plus prompts 15 and 16. November 2026 essay Title 4 asks whether artists and natural scientists should be "equally concerned with ethical questions".
The trap: Writing a general essay about ethics. Keep responsibility tied to knowledge: making it, sharing it, using it.
How the TOK concepts group together
The 12 concepts cluster into three groups, and the groups make the list far easier to hold in your head.

Essay titles almost always pull from more than one group. A title about interpretation in history (group two) is nearly always also asking about evidence and certainty (group one). That's why the advice is "lean on two or three concepts". Pick the one the title is built on, then look at which neighbours it brings with it.
How to use the TOK concepts in the essay
Use the concepts to unpack the title, pick your areas of knowledge, and build each paragraph around a real tension between two of them.
Step 1 — Find the concept in the title. Underline the concept word, or the word standing in for one. "Reliable" points to certainty or justification. "Conveyed" points to power. "Flawed tool" points to objectivity. Our post on the TOK essay prescribed titles does this for every 2026 title.
Step 2 — Write the concept's question next to the title. Take the knowledge question from the list above and put it beside the title. Now you have a lens for every example.
Step 3 — Pick the two areas of knowledge where the concept behaves differently. This is the biggest lever in the essay. If the title is about interpretation, choose one area where interpretation is unavoidable (history) and one where people try to design it out (the natural sciences, or mathematics). The contrast gives you your argument.
Step 4 — Build each paragraph as a tension between two concepts. A strong paragraph doesn't say "here is an example of interpretation". It says "here is a case where interpretation and evidence pull in different directions, and here is what that tells us". Pairs that work well: evidence vs interpretation, certainty vs justification, objectivity vs perspective, power vs truth, values vs objectivity.
Step 5 — Use the concept words only where they do work. Once per paragraph shows control. Five times looks like padding.
A worked example: May 2026 Title 6
The title: "To what extent is interpretation a reliable tool in the production of knowledge? Answer with reference to history and one other area of knowledge."
Concept in the title: interpretation. Neighbours it drags in: evidence (what is being interpreted) and certainty (what "reliable" means).
Areas of knowledge: history is fixed. A good contrast is the natural sciences, where people interpret data too but have built methods to limit the damage.
Paragraph plan:
History, claim: interpretation is unavoidable because sources are incomplete. Example: two historians reading the same 1914 diplomatic cables and reaching different conclusions about who wanted war.
History, counterclaim: unavoidable is not the same as unreliable. Source criticism, cross-referencing and peer review are how history manages interpretation.
Natural sciences, claim: even "raw" data needs interpreting. The same climate readings can look alarming or calm depending on the scale chosen for the graph.
Natural sciences, counterclaim: replication and prediction act as checks. If your interpretation predicts something and it doesn't happen, you find out. History rarely gets that feedback.
Conclusion: interpretation is reliable to the extent that the area of knowledge has ways of catching bad interpretations. History has some. The natural sciences have more. Neither has none.
The whole essay is built on three concepts. Nine never appear, and that's fine.

How to use the TOK concepts in the exhibition
In the exhibition, match your prompt to its concept first, then choose three objects that show that concept working differently in three different settings.
The exhibition is worth a third of your TOK grade and is marked out of 10 on a single question: does the exhibition clearly show how TOK manifests in the world around us? The concepts are your bridge from "here is an object" to "here is what this object says about knowledge".
Here's how the 35 prompts map onto the concepts. Not every prompt fits one concept neatly, but most lean clearly one way.

Say you choose prompt 5, "What counts as good evidence for a claim?" Three objects that show evidence working differently:
A COVID-19 lateral flow test. Evidence that is fast, cheap and sometimes wrong. Good enough for one purpose, not for another.
A family photo with a date written on the back. Evidence that's personal and hard to verify, but that a whole family accepts without question.
A screenshot of a viral post with 50,000 likes. Popularity that looks like evidence and isn't.

Which TOK concepts fit which area of knowledge?
Every concept applies to every area of knowledge, but some pairings produce much richer discussion than others.

When a title fixes one area of knowledge and lets you choose the second, pick the second from a different row. Mathematics and the arts give you a wider essay than mathematics and the natural sciences.
Common mistakes with the TOK concepts
The most common mistake is name-dropping the concepts instead of using them.
Listing all 12 concepts in the introduction. It reads as a checklist and wastes 40 of your 1,600 words. Name the one or two the title is built on and get on with it.
Using the concept as a synonym for "knowledge". "The evidence of the historian's knowledge shows that..." doesn't mean anything. If you can swap the concept word for "knowledge" and the sentence still works, you're not using the concept.
Defining the concept and stopping. The IB's assessment objectives ask for arguments, evidence, evaluation of different points of view, and implications. A definition is none of those.
Picking the wrong concept for the title. Reading "Is the power of knowledge determined by the way it is conveyed?" as a question about communication rather than power sends the whole essay the wrong way. Underline the concept word first. Always.
Treating the concepts as the old ways of knowing. Students with older siblings or older study guides sometimes structure essays around reason, emotion and sense perception. Those were dropped in 2022. Examiners will notice.

How many TOK concepts should I use in my essay?
Two or three. The strongest TOK essays build the whole argument around the concept the title is based on, then bring in one or two neighbouring concepts where they create a real tension. An essay about interpretation in history will naturally pull in evidence and certainty. Trying to use all 12 spreads the essay too thin and reads as a checklist.
What replaced the ways of knowing in TOK?
The 12 TOK concepts replaced the eight ways of knowing when the new course started, with first assessment in May 2022. The old ways of knowing were language, sense perception, emotion, reason, imagination, faith, intuition and memory. The new course also introduced a knowledge framework of four parts (scope, perspectives, methods and tools, ethics) applied to every area of knowledge.
What is the difference between evidence and justification in TOK?
Evidence is the information that supports a claim. Justification is the argument you build from that evidence to show why the claim should be accepted. A set of lab results is evidence; the reasoning that connects those results to a conclusion is the justification. The same evidence can justify different conclusions depending on the argument, which is why TOK treats them as two separate concepts.
What is the difference between perspective and interpretation in TOK?
Perspective is where you are looking from: your background, training, culture, language and experience. Interpretation is what you do with what you see: the meaning you give it. Two people with different perspectives will often produce different interpretations of the same source or event. Perspective is the cause; interpretation is the result.
Which TOK concepts work best for the exhibition?
Evidence, values, responsibility and objectivity tend to work best, because they are easy to show through physical objects. A lateral flow test, a receipt, a museum ticket or a screenshot can each show evidence, values or responsibility in a concrete way. Abstract concepts like truth and certainty are harder to link to a specific object, though it can be done.
Are the TOK concepts the same as the areas of knowledge?
No. The five areas of knowledge (mathematics, the natural sciences, the human sciences, history and the arts) are the fields TOK examines. The 12 concepts are the ideas TOK uses to examine them. You apply the concepts to the areas of knowledge, for example by asking how certainty works in mathematics compared with history.
